League play in basketball heats up this week
Coeur d’Alene High’s boys basketball team, riding a nine-game winning streak, travels to defending 5A Inland Empire League champion Post Falls on Tuesday.
Coeur d’Alene, which opened league play with a win at Lake City last week, is 10-1. It’s the league opener for Post Falls (8-5), and just the second home game of the season for the Trojans.
The teams will meet again Feb. 6 at Coeur d’Alene High.
Post Falls’ girls (10-6, 2-0 5A IEL), the league leaders, host Coeur d’Alene (6-7, 0-2) on Tuesday.
Also Tuesday, Lake City’s boys (3-9, 0-1 5A IEL) and girls (12-3, 1-1) travel to Lewiston (boys 6-5, 0-0, girls 10-4, 1-1).
On Wednesday, Timberlake’s girls (11-1) play host to Lapwai (11-1, with a game Tuesday at Lapwai). Timberlake, a 3A school, handed Lapwai, a 1A Division I squad, its only loss, 65-56 in November at a tournament in Lewiston.
On Friday, its the annual Fight for the Fish spirit basketball games between Coeur d’Alene and Lake City, with this year’s event scheduled for cozy Elmer Jordan Court.
Lake City has won the spirit competition the last five years, and 12 times in 17 Fish competitions.
Coeur d’Alene High is hosting the event for the seventh time.
On the basketball court, Lake City’s girls are 2-0 vs. Coeur d’Alene this season, including a league win last week at home.
In wrestling, the 19th annual River City Duals are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Post Falls High. Post Falls is defending champion.
North Idaho College’s men and women play just once this week — Saturday in Twin Falls vs. the College of Southern Idaho.
