PREP BASKETBALL: Sandpoint girls top Hawks in 4A IEL opener

RATHDRUM — Madi Schoening totaled 20 points, seven rebounds, six steals, three assists and two blocked shots as the Sandpoint Bulldogs rolled to a 47-11 victory over the Lakeland Hawks in the 4A Inland Empire League opener Saturday night at Hawk Court.

Riley Couch hit three 3-pointers and added 11 points for Sandpoint (8-8), and Grace Kirscher had seven points, four rebounds and three assists.

“We played some really good defense tonight and were able to disrupt what they wanted to do,” Sandpoint assistant coach Will Love said. “The press gave them some problems and we got some key baskets early on.”

Lakeland (4-9) committed 22 first-half turnover and trailed 32-3 at halftime. Dani Dowd grabbed seven rebounds for the Hawks, who play at Moscow on Thursday.

“Sandpoint executed well and we just put ourselves behind the 8-ball and had a hard time getting into offensive sets,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “Their length and their quickness caused problems. They played pretty well in the first half.”

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Vikings made 21 of 31 from the free-throw line, and pulled away from the Badgers with a 23-6 second quarter in the nonleague game at Elmer Jordan Court.

“Our free-throw shooting was respectable, and that’s something that’s been a problem in the past,” Coeur d’Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. “The work the kids have done in practice the last couple of weeks seems to be paying off.”

Emily Callahan had 12 points aand three steals, and Baylie Miller added 10 points for Coeur d’Alene (6-7). Rey Louden had nine points and eight rebounds, and Kelly Horning had eight points and seven boards.

Bonners Ferry dropped to 3-7.

Coeur d’Alene plays at Post Falls on Tuesday.

“Defensively we played a great game,” Tigers coach Matt Miller said. “They had four field goals the whole game. I was happy with our rebounding. They had a lot of second chances.”

ST. MARIES — Kelsey Auer had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals to lead the Lumberjacks past the Maniacs in a Central Idaho League game.

St. Maries (10-1, 2-0 CIL) opened a 19-6 lead after the first quarter, keyed by turnovers from its full-court press.

“We were able to get the press going and get some transition points in the first quarter,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines aid. “We pulled the press off at halftime and they made a good run on us, so we put the press back on and sealed the deal. That’s been the key for us all year has been our press, but our bench has been playing great this year. We’ve been getting 15 to 20 points a game, and they scored 21 tonight and that was a great job by them tonight.”

Devyn Wilson had 10 points and nine rebounds, Alexis Cordell six points and six assists and Paige Sines four steals for St. Maries, which visits Grangeville next Saturday.

Mayra Rodriguez scored 23 points for Orofino (6-6, 0-2).

HARRISON FLATS — Grace McInturff had a monster of a game, totaling 21 points, nine rebounds and five steals, to spearhead the Warriors to a North Star League rout of the Wampus Cats.

“She probably had her best game of her career,” Kootenai coach Mike LaFountaine said. “We had a huge fourth quarter. I was really impressed with our bench and how they helped us pull away. It was the difference for us.”

Kaili Gentry had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors (4-5, 1-3).

Leslie Kiebert had 11 points and seven rebounds and Brooke Stevens had five rebounds and three steals for Clark Fork (3-6, 1-2).

“We’ve been sick all week, and are just trying to work through that,” Clark Fork coach Mark Stevens said. “We just kind of ran out of gas in the fourth quarter.”

Kootenai plays Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Priest River in a makeup game.

MULLAN — The host Tigers made four free throws in the last minute, finishing off a close North Star League win over the Jaguars at the Mullan Pavilion.

Charli Sadler had 22 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, nine steals and three blocked shots, and Nina Schaefer had 14 rebounds for Mullan (3-6, 1-2 NSL), which hosts the Coeur d’Alene freshmen team on Monday.

“Schaefer, Sadler and (Samantha) Stepro played great defense on the inside,” Mullan coach Sherry Leitz said. “I’m so proud of the girls tonight for working hard and staying focused.”

Bella Murekatete had 12 points, 15 rebounds and five steals for Genesis Prep (4-8, 1-4). Rachel Schroeder finished with 14 points, eight rebounds seven assists.

“It was close the whole game,” Genesis Prep coach Debbie Holte said. “It was quite the battle over there.”

Genesis Prep plays a nonleague game at Logos in Moscow on Tuesday.

“Dakota had a really good night and did a good job of keeping (Hayden) Wilson (of Orofino) under control,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “I thought he did a really good job on him.”

Kiefer Gibson had nine points and eight rebounds for St. Maries (9-1), which hosts Garfield-Palouse on Tuesday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Kyler Zorica hit three 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 17 points, and all five of the visiting Grizzlies’ made 3-pointers came in the first two quarters en route to a 33-11 halftime lead.

“That first half was pretty brutal,” Timberlake coach Tony Hanna said. “They were hot, and we couldn’t put the ball in the hole. We made a ton of mistakes, and they capitalized on our mistakes.”

Brayden Menti and Brandon Hausladen each scored 10 points for Timberlake (4-6), which plays host to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

HARRISON FLATS — Hunter Whipple totaled 13 points and six assists, and Anthony Keogh added 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Warriors beat the visiting Wampus Cats in North Star League play.

Whipple hit a key 3-pointer in the second quarter as Kootenai (5-4, 1-1) outscored Clark Fork 20-4 to break it open.

“We played almost a full game,” Kootenai coach T.J. Hammond said. “We played awful vs. Priest River on Tuesday, OK vs. Coeur d’Alene Charter on Thursday and pretty good tonight. Offensively we played really, really well.”

Dylan Roper posted a double-double for Clark Fork (0-7, 0-2) with 10 points and 10 boards, and Spencer Jeffres added six points and 11 rebounds, but Clark Fork shot just 5 of 21 from the line and committed 30 turnovers.

“Turnovers just killed us,” Clark Fork coach George Thornton said. “We had some bright spots, but they were few and far between.”
