DRIVERS: Watch for humans

| January 6, 2016 8:00 PM

My concern is drivers who pay no attention or have any regard to pedestrians. I live on a busy street, Prairie Avenue, where it is five lanes. When I go out to get the Coeur d’Alene Press in the mornings, I wait for traffic to pass and all is clear before stepping into the bicycle lane to retrieve my newspaper.

Usually before I can retreat from my newspaper box, traffic is there again. I could reach out and touch these vehicles. Why can’t they get in the other lane? What if I fell into the lane of traffic?

In about 2014, we had our mailbox/newspaper box taken out by a distracted driver. He did knock on our door to confess & apologize. He also replaced it himself. The other morning while retrieving my newspaper, one driver that passed by was holding his/her cell phone up to their right ear and made some sort of gesture with the left hand. In this weather?

Please have respect for pedestrians, especially in this weather!
