POCATELLO — Different crew.

Same result.

Post Falls is the state 5A champion. And it wasn’t even close.

Senior Alius De La Rosa beat James Fisher of Centennial 6-0 at 145 pounds to win his fourth state title, adding to his state titles at 98, 113 and 132 his first three years.

He’s the first four-time state champion in school history.

“It was amazing to have him pull it off,” seventh-year Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “Those two had gone 1-on-1 all year and he (De La Rosa) beat him in a dual and lost to Fisher in OT in the Hall of Fame dual. It wasn’t a sure thing, but Alius needed to get it done. There was a lot of butterflies in my stomach, but Alius was calm and went out and did it. He’s a gamer.”

Freshman Ridge Lovett (98 pounds), Matt McLeod (120) and Tyler Wolf (138) also won titles for Post Falls, which repeated as champions with 250 team points.

It’s still really special,” Reardon said. “It’s a lot different than last year because it’s a different crew that did it. It really doesn’t feel like a carryover from last year. These guys went out and earned it on their own.”

In 4A, Lakeland had two state champions, and finished second overall. Sophomore Larry Johnson won at 126 pounds for his second state title in two years — he won at 113 last year. And junior Jared Walker won at 170.

Sandpoint also boasted a pair of state champions. Junior Casey Randles won at 182 for his second straight state title, after winning at 170 last year. And Bulldog Tyler Presser won his first state title, at 160.

The welcome home motorcade for the Post Falls wrestling team is scheduled to start at Kootenai Fire and Rescue on Seltice around 4:30, athletic director Craig Christensen said. The motorcade will end at the high school with a pep rally.

“I felt prepared for him,” said De La Rosa of facing Fisher again. “It was a great thing to get back at him one more time.”

De La Rosa finished 39-1.

“It’s a great feeling,” De La Rosa said. “Winning the team title is definitely up there too. These guys worked really hard for this title. It’s really hard to beat.”

Due to a disqualification of his semifinal opponent on Friday, Wolf, a senior, had the unique opportunity to sit and watch his teammates fight through the semifinals and consolation rounds, only having to wrestle in the finals, where he won 2-0 over Kade Grigsby of Columbia.

“He warmed up like usual with his teammates at the start of the day,” Reardon said of Wolf. “After the placing matches, Seth McLeod went and wrestled a full match with him to simulate him having another match. That way, he felt good and had a really, really good warmup rather than sitting all day.”

“It was kind of weird not wrestling this morning, and kind of sucked,” said Wolf, who finished 38-3. “I just warmed up and wrestled a great match. It feels great to be a two-time champ, but if I had to pick, being the team champ my final two years was better. We’ve worked so hard as a team and we deserve this.”

Lovett, a freshman, finished the season 40-0.

“He was awesome all weekend,” Reardon said. “He’s a gamer and a big match kid. We’ve got a lot of faith in him with all of the experience in folkstyle and greco roman that he has. You don’t feel the anticipation that you do with other kids his age. It was nice to have him get us out to a nice start.”

Lovett pinned Derek Ramos of Hillcrest in 5:21, his fourth win by pin of the tournament.

“Everything was working well for me,” Lovett said. “I wasn’t giving up shots and was really pushing my pace all weekend. I was down here last year to watch, and just being a part of this is amazing.

McLeod, a sophomore, won his first title at 120 with a 3-1 decision over Dekker Anderson of Highland.

“It was awesome to see him get it done,” Reardon said. “He lost a tough one last year and was having a tough go at the start of the season. He didn’t place at Tri-State and lost at Centennial and he said to himself he was tired of losing. Since then, he’s grown in techinques and strides. It’s neat to see a kid like that pull it off.”

“I just went out and wanted to win and win that match,” McLeod (31-9) said of the finals. “I just got to my shots and did the best I could to wrestle smart and was able to get up by a little bit.”

Other Post Falls placers include: Jordan Grimm (second at 106), Mathias De La Rosa (second at 113), Braydon Huber (second at 126), Jason Burchell (third at 132), Queong Rahman-Smith (fourth at 152), Brad Noesen (fourth at 195), Alessio Lemmon (fifth at 106) and Wyatt Shelly (sixth at 132).

Coeur d’Alene had six placers — Dylan Lockwood (fourth at 138), Vince Rey (fourth at 182), Kaleb Maciosek (fifth at 113), Alex Marshall (fifth at 220), Jacob Krous (sixth at 106) and Mario Peregrina (sixth at 145) — to finish eighth.

“They’ve came a long way this season,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Our guys didn’t wrestle bad, but we didn’t have any breaks go our way today. We lost six straight one-point matches, and it kind of snowballed from that. It wasn’t because we were wrestling bad, just didn’t have things go our way.”

Lake City’s Andrew Olvera was sixth at 170.

“Andrew did everything we asked of in the tournament, eighth-year Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “There was some drama in his match, but it was fun to watch.”

4A

Walker, third at 170 last year, made a vow after losing to Jared Bird of 5A Bonneville in the finals at the Rollie Lane Invitational in Nampa in January.

“After I calmed down, I promised myself I wasn’t going to lose the rest of the season,” Walker said. “And it was a pretty cool feeling to achieve.”

Walker made it to the finals on the strength of three pins, then beat Jared Sargent of Blackfoot 5-2 in the finals. What made the win extra sweet was one of his coaches for the finals was his dad, Marty, who had coached him for years growing up.

“As soon as the buzzer went off, I ran and gave him a hug,” said Walker, who finished 41-3. “That was probably the coolest moment of my life.”

“He really turned it on after the Rollie Lane,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “He was very motivated.”

Johnson was more businesslike in his approach to winning a state title the year, after the emotion of winning his first last year.

He pinned his first three opponents at state en route to the finals, where he handed Kade Smith of Pocatello his first loss of the season. Smith had beaten Johnson in the Hall of Fame Dual earlier this month at Meridian.

“I was beating him and got caught,” said Johnson, who finished 44-3. “I was winning and he caught me in a five-point move. This time I just wrestled smarter, got my points first and stayed ahead and wrestled tough.”

“He deserved winning that title,” Edelblute said. “All the hours before and after practice, and it pretty much came down to dominating the state tournament. He was never in trouble. He really stepped up as a team leader this year.”

Lakeland had three state runners-up in Sam Edelblute (98), William Edelblute (106) and Brian Edelblute (120) — all nephews of the Hawks’ coach.

“In our coaches’ minds, the most inspirational wrestler of the tournament was Brian Edelblute,” Rob Edelblute said. “He was not even seeded, he beat the No. 2 seed and the No. 3 seed to get in the finals, and led in the finals before losing a heartbreaker. But without his points, we might not have taken second.”

Caldwell won going away with 289 points. Lakeland was second with 184.5, and Pocatello was third with 166.5.

“We knew Caldwell was coming back loaded,” Edelblute said of the defending champs. “We turned it on Friday morning, and we ended up creeping up on Minico and Pocatello to take second.”

Other Lakeland placers: Chandler Axtell (fourth at 98) and Tyler Siegford (fourth at 132).

In last year’s state finals, Presser was leading in his match when, on a move, he suffered a broken collarbone. He tried to finish the match, but ended up getting pinned.

He went to the hospital for pain medication, which only made the long bus ride home from Pocatello only slightly less painful.

“He was determined to make up for it this year,” Sandpoint coach Mike Randles said.

Presser defeated Irving Capuchino of Caldwell 4-3 in the finals this year.

“It (the injury) was really motivating (this year), because I knew I was capable of,” Presser said. “Last year, my confidence going into the finals was super high, and this year it was even higher.

Presser, who hopes to wrestle in college, finished 25-10.

“He’s just so explosive,” Randles said. “He’s so athletic, and he uses it well. He’s been really driven, and it paid off for him.”

Casey Randles, who won at 170 last year, pinned Zachary Borrayo of Jerome at the end of the first period in the finals at 182.

“I’ve always wanted to win more than one state title, and I accomplished that this year,” Randles said. “Last year coming into the tournament I wasn’t very confident, and came out very slow. This year I came out more confident.”

‘He’s so much more mentally mature this year,” said Mike Randles, his dad and coach. “So if something goes wrong he doesn’t get rattled, he just finds the gear he’s looking for. In the finals he got reversed, and he just shrugged it off and took him down and pinned him.”

Casey Randles, who finished 36-0, agreed.

“I got a little rattled in the first period in the finals, but I took a couple of deep breaths and came back and pinned the kid,” he said.

Sandpoint just missed a trophy, finishing fifth with 134.5 points. Minico was fourth with 155.

Other Sandpoint placers: Jacob Williams (fourth at 285), Tanner Kohal (fifth at 145), Mahonri Hunsaker (fifth at 152), Elijah Guthrie (fifth at 160) and Owen Stebbins (sixth at 170).

3A: Kellogg finished eighth with six placers: Tanner Figueroa (fourth at 132), Dylan Huber (fourth at 152), Robby Smith (fourth at 160), Jesse Campbell (sixth at 113), Jaden Ballad (sixth at 138) and Tucker Day (sixth at 170).

Timberlake’s Caleb Munson (fourth at 170) and Ryder Mervin (fourth at 285) also placed.

Gregory Fitzmorris was second at 182 and Brandon Downs (fifth at 98) for Priest River, which finished 10th.

Caleb Gering was runner-up at 195 for Bonners Ferry.

2A: St. Maries senior Hayden Humphrey finished third at 132 for the Lumberjacks.
