STATE HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: Post Falls leads big after day 1
POCATELLO — It’s no surprise that the defending champion Post Falls Trojans have opened a 42.5-point lead in the team race after the first day of the state 5A wrestling tournament at Holt Arena on Friday.
How they did it — and by who — might have caught seventh-year Trojan coach Pete Reardon off guard.
Not that’s it’s a bad thing though.
Post Falls will send nine wrestlers — Ridge Lovett (98 pounds), Jordan Grimm (106), Mathias De La Rosa (113), Matt McLeod (120), Braydon Huber (126), Wyatt Shelly (132), Tyler Wolf (138), Alius De La Rosa (145), Queong Rahman-Smith (152) — to today’s semifinal round starting at 8:30 a.m. PST.
Kaleb Maciosek (113), Dylan Lockwood (138) and Vince Rey (182) advanced to the semifinals for Coeur d’Alene, which is seventh with 69.5 points.
5A: Of those advancing, it was Shelly, an unseeded freshman, that stepped up for the Trojans on day one.
“It was a huge win for him to get a pin in his first match,” Reardon said of Shelly. “It was reallly big for him and he had a great showing today. We have some guys that we rely on to do so well typically. That being said, sometimes things don’t go as planned and we had one or two matches we should have won and got caught. We just kind of had to weather the storm and find some way to score some points.”
Wolf has already clinched a spot in the finals after his opponent in the semifinals was disqualified from the tournament after the quarterfinals.
Post Falls leads with 132.5 points, followed by Columbia with 90 points. Meridian is third with 89.5.
“I think we’re in a good spot,” Reardon said. “I told the guys we’re up 43 points, but that’s with Tyler’s points going into the finals. We’re in the driver’s seat, but it’s not over yet.”
Coeur d’Alene has seven wrestlers still in the consolation rounds.
“We did real well,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “We had 12 in the tournament, we’re sitting in seventh place. We have 10 guys left. We just don’t have the numbers. We’re real happy, we just have to get into the blood rounds (today). The only reason we’re not in third place is teams have almost double (the wrestlers) than we’ve got. We wrestled tremendous. They all have tough matches. We wrestled hard all day.”
Nate Lambert (152), Andrew Olvera (170) and Rusty Dan (195) remain in the consolation rounds for Lake City.
4A: The Lakeland Hawks will send six into today’s semifinal round, with Chandler Axtell (98), Sam Edelblute (98), Will Edelblute (106), Brian Edelblute (120), Larry Johnson (126) and Jared Walker (170) winning twice on the opening day.
Lakeland is second in the 4A team scoring with 97 points, trailing Caldwell with 155 points.
3A: Junior Caleb Munson (170) and senior Ryder Mervin (285) advanced to the semifinals for Timberlake, which is ninth with 46 points.
Sugar-Salem leads the team scoring with 117 points.
2A: St. Maries senior Hayden Humphrey, who finished runner-up at 132 last year, advanced to the semifinals for the Lumberjacks with pins in his first two matches.
Ririe leads with 123 points.
