The VIP Juniors won 6 of 6 matches in a 24-team bracket, which included teams ranked 1-15 in the region. HOCKEY

Thunder state champs: The Coeur d’Alene Thunder Bantam hockey team won the state championship in the 14-and-under division last weekend at Frontier Ice Arena for their first state title.

Teams from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Falls, Boise, Treasure Valley, McCall, Sun Valley, Salmon and Lewiston competed in the 14U division.

Going into the final game they were undefeated and had not been scored on as of yet in the tournament. The Thunder defeated the Cristeros 7-0 and Treasure Valley 6-0 in pool play, then defeated Sun Valley 6-0 in the championship round to reach the finals, where they defeated Idaho Falls 3-2.

In the final game against Idaho Falls, The Thunder got off to a quick lead, 2-0. Idaho Falls tied it up in the second period. With 5 minutes left in the game, assistant captain Alex Enegren scored the game-winning goal and the Thunder went on to win the state title, 3-2.

The Coeur d’Alene Thunder play in the Canadian West Kootenay League. Nine of the 13 teams in the league are Canadian. The Thunder finished their regular season in first place with 11 wins and 1 loss, with 91 goals for and only 15 goals against them all season. The team will head to Castlegar, British Columbia, in two weeks for league playoffs.

GYMNASTICS

Technique Gymnastics: The Optionals girls team from Technique Gymnastics of Hayden traveled to Boise for the Queen of Hearts competition on Feb. 20. The following are the results from the meet, listing Technique gymnasts who placed in the top 3:

LEVEL 6 — Marissa McCallum – 3rd on Floor, 1st on Vault, Beam, and All Around. She also received the Ice Queen Award for highest beam score of the Level 6 session. Madi Mae Bailey – 2nd on Beam
