PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Sieler sends Lumberjacks to 2A District 1-2 final

| February 24, 2016 8:00 PM

TROY — Jake Sieler hit a tying 3-pointer at the buzzer and finished with a game-high 18 points, leading the top-seeded St. Maries Lumberjacks past the third-seeded Orofino Maniacs 61-57 in overtime of a 2A District 1-2 semifinal game on Tuesday at Troy High.

St. Maries (19-3) will face the winner of Thursday’s game between Grangeville and Orofino in the championship game to advance to the state 2A tournament. Either Grangeville or Orofino will need to beat St. Maries twice to advance, with a win either Friday or Saturday sending the Lumberjacks to the tournament which begins next Thursday at Capital High in Boise.

“It didn’t look good most of the game,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “Jake got a great look at the buzzer, and what an amazing shot. Give Orofino a lot of credit, they had a great gameplan and played a heck of a game.”

Hayden Wilson scored 18 points for Orofino (10-11).

Kiefer Gibson had 21 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks for St. Maries.

SPIRIT LAKE — Anthony Keogh had 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists, but was lost to a concussion late in the fourth quarter of the Warriors’ win over the Knights in a 1A Division II District 1 semifinal game at Timberlake High.

“We had no energy and played flat,” Kootenai coach T.J. Hammond said. “We didn’t shoot the ball great, but we switched up defenses in the second quarter. To hold them to eight points in the second and third quarter was really good. We played a little tight at the end of the game, and that was a little disturbing. We need to have a little better basketball sense to beat a team like Genesis Prep. As a coach, it’s just one of those games you’re happy you won.”

Tristen Usdrowski scored seven points for Kootenai (12-9).

Bryar Sanchez scored 15 points for Lakeside, which finishes 5-17.
