CHARTERS: SB 1248 unnecessary
Currently there is legislation, SB 1248, being decided in Idaho that seemingly has no positive value for education. The bill serves to remove contract rights from charter school teachers — making them one year employees — dismissing them without recourse.
It’s been my experience that teachers who enter a school take time to develop programs and relationships to truly make a school great. Developing pride in a school mission and vision is nurtured and built over time. These teachers are able to also build a future in the community and contribute in a variety of ways.
This bill is not necessary because when a school leader is diligent to hire quality teachers, empower them through leadership, and support the mission and vision of the school, teachers gain in ability and grow the programs that inspire learners. Idaho laws currently empower the principal to perform the duties of effective evaluation and oversight, and follow the path of dismissal when necessary — indeed it is a great leader who takes this job seriously for the benefit of children.
As I work alongside my current colleagues I am proud of the work they have accomplished and continue to support them as a positive and supportive professional. I hope Idaho will show appreciation for these incredible teachers who give so much to the children they teach.
