Milan announces campaign for Senate seat

| February 20, 2016 8:00 PM

Kristi Milan announced her candidacy for Idaho State Senate District 4.

Milan, a Democrat, is seeking election to the seat now held by Mary Souza.

Milan is running because, according to a press release, “she passionately believes that Idaho deserves better than the politicians currently representing Kootenai County residents in the Idaho State Legislature.”

A 20-year resident of Kootenai County and a retired middle school teacher from the Coeur d’Alene School District, Milan is the mother of three and grandmother of five, all but one of whom have attended local public schools. Before returning to school to earn her teaching credentials, Milan accumulated a wide variety of work experience, including running a family-owned aluminum fabrication business, managing a floral shop, and selling residential and commercial insurance.

“When elected,” Milan said, “I will serve this community by focusing on strengthening education, building the economy, and safeguarding the environment.”

The press release states Milan believes the state’s education system can be re-energized with proper support for public schools and education employees. The press release also states Milan, as an avid outdoorsman herself, believes Idaho’s public lands should be protected to ensure recreation areas remain accessible for the many outdoor activities that are essential to the state’s tourism industry. She will seek a balance to protect public lands while still supporting the industries of mining, forestry and timber.
