PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Davis sparks Lakeland to win over Lake City

| February 17, 2016 8:00 PM

RATHDRUM — Kaden Davis scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half to lead the Lakeland Hawks past the Lake City Timberwolves 56-51 in a nonleague game at Hawk Court on Tuesday.

“We were able to move the ball a little better in the second half,” Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. “Kaden hit three of his five 3-pointers in the second half and Andrew Knight hit all three of his. We just did a better job of moving the ball against their zone and getting better looks than we did in the first half. Sometimes, the shots just fall when things are going good and fall in bunches for us.”

Andrew Knight had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Dylan Knight had 11 points and seven assists for Lakeland (9-11), which hosts Sandpoint in a 4A Inland Empire League game on Thursday.

James Carlson scored 13 points and Kenny Louie-McGee added 12 points for Lake City (6-15), which opens the 5A Region 1 tournament on Friday at Lewiston.

SPIRIT LAKE — Tyler Gibbons had 16 of his 20 points in the second half as the Intermountain League champion Wildcats rallied to beat the Tigers in league play.

“Right now, I’m really pleased with how we played,” said Timberlake coach Tony Hanna, whose team led by 12 points in the third quarter before Kellogg rallied to cut the deficit to 42-40 after the quarter. “We just sent them to the free-throw line too many times. It was a really good game, and we’re playing our best basketball right now and think we’re going to be a tough team to beat at districts next week. Kellogg’s a good team and did what they needed to do to win.”

Kellogg finished the game 23 of 31 from the foul line, compared to 4 of 9 for Timberlake.

Daniel Smith had 19 points and eight rebounds and Brayden Menti had 15 points for Timberlake (6-13, 1-5 IML), which concludes the regular season by hosting Moscow on Thursday.

Kellogg (16-4, 6-0) is off until the opening round of the 3A District 1 tournament against Timberlake on Monday at 6:15 p.m. at North Idaho College.

HARRISON FLATS — Hunter Whipple scored 13 points and Dylan Wright added 11, helping the Warriors beat the Knights in North Star League action.

“If you can hold them under 10 per quarter, it’s good,” Kootenai coach TJ Hammond said. “Lakeside’s kids are smart and we played really good defense. The team was sick, but Naphtali David did a good job on the boards. Hunter Whipple had one of his better games, he shot 6 for 11 from the field. He had a 3 that really established a run in the second quarter. We put together four good quarters.”

Lakeside (6-15, 4-6 NSL) was led by Bryar Sanchez, who scored 10 points.

Kootenai (11-9, 6-4) will face Lakeside again on Tuesday in the 1A Division II District 1 tournament at Timberlake High.
