PREP ROUNDUP: Lewiston overtakes Post Falls, nabs No.1 seed to regionals

• BOYS BASKETBALL

LEWISTON — Post Falls jumped out to an early lead, but Lewiston’s size started to take over, and its guards hit key 3-pointers down the stretch as the Bengals defeated the Trojans 74-64 in the 5A Inland Empire League finale Friday night at Booth Hall.

Lewiston (12-8, 4-2 5A IEL), Post Falls (14-7, 4-2) and Coeur d’Alene (16-4, 4-2) finished tied for the league title. But with Lewiston’s margin of victory Friday night, using a point-differential tiebreaker involving games between the three teams, Lewiston earned the No. 1 seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament. Coeur d’Alene is the No. 2 seed, Post Falls No. 3.

Max McCullough scored a career-high 38 points for Post Falls, which jumped out to a 20-12 lead after one quarter.

Trystan Bradley, a 6-foot-7 junior, led Lewiston with 26 points. Braeden Wilson, a 6-5 sophomore, added 23.

“In the first quarter we shot the ball pretty well,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “They did a much better job in the second and third quarter slowing it down, and they just bludgeoned us inside with Wilson and Bradley.”

Still, Post Falls was in it down the stretch. Trailing by three with 2 minutes to go, the Trojans missed a 3-pointer, and Lewiston responded with 3-pointers by Dalton Stamper and Keeshawn Clarke — their first baskets of the game — and Wilson added a 3-point play for the Bengals, who hit 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch.

“We weren’t going to allow Wilson and Bradley to beat us down the stretch,” McLean said. “Hats off to those kids, they stepped up and made the shots.”

Jake Pfennigs had six rebounds for Post Falls, McCullough five, and Wyatt Millsap had nine points and four boards.

Using point differentials from each team’s games vs. the other two (with a cap of nine points), Lewiston ended up with +6 points, Coeur d’Alene had +2, Post Falls -8.

In the first round at regionals next Friday, Post Falls travels to Coeur d’Alene, and Lake City (6-13, 0-6) visits Lewiston.

(Caden) Bonacci is always scrapping and hustling, and (Jakob) Lynn always hustles his butt off. McElver hit some good shots, and (Austin) Lee is just rock solid at all times.”
