GENESEE — St. Maries’ bid for its first state tournament berth since 2002 came up just short on Thursday night, as the Lumberjacks lost 53-38 to the Grangeville Bulldogs in the championship game of the 2A District 1-2 girls basketball tournament at Genesee High.

Haley Sullivan scored 21 points for Grangeville (13-8), which advances to the state 2A tournament at Kuna High beginning next Thursday.

St. Maries finished 18-4, three of the losses coming to Grangeville, including one in the semifinals Monday night which meant the Lumberjacks had to win Thursday to force a second title game Saturday. The two teams shared the Central Idaho League title.

St. Maries led 17-15 at halftime, but Grangeville outscored the Lumberjacks 24-9 in the third quarter.

“They hit three 3-pointers right in a row and put us in a hole, and we just didn’t answer on the offensive end,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines said.

Grangeville went to a stall in the fourth quarter, and St. Maries ended up having to foul, and the Bulldogs finished 27 of 41 from the free-throw line.

Devyn Wilson had 10 points and six rebounds for St. Maries, and Kelsey Auer had eight points and nine rebounds.

KELLOGG — Lillian Rhea scored nine of her 18 points in the second quarter to lead the top-seeded Knights past the fourth-seeded Warriors in the semifinals of the 1A Division II District 1 tournament at Andrews Gymnasium.

“Kootenai played extremely well in the first half,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “We were able to get it tied up heading into the half and switched to a zone and shut things down from the outside and they didn’t make much inside. We started to get better looks in the second half, and the shots weren’t falling for Kootenai. We played a little tight early on, but got better as the game went on.”

Lakeside (14-5) will face Genesis Prep in tonight’s championship game at 6 at Kellogg.

Kaili Gentry, Grace McInturff and Allison Short scored eight points each for Kootenai, which finishes 8-13.

Offensively we had to work hard for every basket we had. The girls were patient with our offense and worked for some good shots. I’m glad they stepped up.”

Josie Scribner grabbed 11 rebounds and Shaye Schreibeis had 11 points and four assists for the Jaguars (11-10).

Genesis Prep plays Lakeside tonight in the championship game in Kellogg at 6.

“We have a chance to play for state, which is a fantastic place to be,” Holte said. “Three weeks ago we were 5-10 and we won six games in a row. Lakeside is a tough team.”
