PREP ROUNDUP: Post Falls pins down Lake City

POST FALLS — Senior David Booth stepped in the starting lineup on Wednesday night and earned a pin as the Post Falls Trojans beat the Lake City Timberwolves 71-10 at The Arena in the final regular season dual for both before next week’s 5A Region 1 tournament at Lakeland High in Rathdrum.

“It was a great night by our kids,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “It was a great night to honor our seniors. David did a great job in a tough weight class. He wrestled great and got a pin.”

Post Falls won nine matches by pin against Lake City.

Bryce Bowen won by pin at 220 for Lake City.

LEWISTON — Alex Marshall (220 pounds) and David Valencia (170) had strong matches for the Vikings in a dual win over the Bengals at Booth Hall.

“The guys who had a good night were we had a brand-new kid, David Valencia, who filled in at 170 and got a pin for us,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Alex Marshall at 220 looked good. Garrett Ashby lost a close one at 120. The guys who should’ve won did. Chase Baca lost at 132 and at 195, Jordan Dean lost. Overall, it was a good night as we get ready for districts next week.”

Both teams compete at the 5A Region 1 tournament on Feb. 20 at Lakeland.

SPIRIT LAKE — Sam Edelblute (98 pounds) and William Edelblute (106) each had early pins to set the tone for the Hawks in a dual win over the Tigers.

Sage See (152) and Bradley Allen (195) also got key pins for Lakeland.

“Overall, the kids wrestled pretty tough,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “We had some kids stepping into the varsity lineup for the first time, getting some wins for us. At 152 we had Sage See who got a pin for us. At 195 we had Bradley Allen wrestling and he got a pin as well. The kids wrestled pretty soundly and tough.”

Lakeland hosts Sandpoint on Friday.

HARRISON FLATS — Kelsey Auer helped the Lumberjacks control the boards, with 15 points and 17 rebounds — 12 on the offensive end — in a win over the Panthers in a 2A District 1-2 tournament loser-out game at Kootenai High.

“We pretty much controlled the boards right off the bat and established our inside game right away,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines said. “We put them in a hole right away. Our girls did a good job rebounding. We ended up with 28 offensive rebounds.”

Kaylee Auer added nine points and seven rebounds, and Alena Davenport scored 10 points for St. Maries (18-3).

Kelly Ruebke scored nine points for Coeur d’Alene Charter, which finishes 5-18.

St. Maries advances to the championship game against Grangeville at Genesee tonight at 7 p.m. If the Lumberjacks win, they’ll play Grangeville again on Saturday in an if-necessary game.

COEUR d’ALENE — After Sandpoint High senior point guard Riley Couch went down with a right ankle injury early in the third quarter, Montana signee Madi Schoening scored all of Sandpoint’s 14 points over the game’s last 14 minutes, and finished with 22 as the Bulldogs held on to beat the Bears in the 4A Region 1 championship game at North Idaho College’s Rolly Williams Court for Sandpoint’s third straight regional title.

Sandpoint (13-9) will open at state next Thursday at 2 p.m. PST at Timberline High in Boise, facing the loser of tonight’s 4A District 4 title game between Minico (20-3) and Burley (15-9).

Moscow advances to a state play-in game Saturday at Grangeville vs. the third-place team from District 3.

Sandpoint scored the game’s first 10 points, but after Couch went down, Moscow pulled within 30-26 early in the fourth quarter.

Neither team scored for the next two minutes, then Schoening collected an inbounds pass from BreLynn Converse and sank a 3-pointer from the left wing with just under 3 minutes remaining.

Moscow was forced to foul — and foul — after that, and Schoening hit 5 of 6 free throws over the final 1:31.
