PIGSKIN PROGNOSTICATORS: It's a wrap: Handing out postseason hardware

My wife is gorgeous, smart and a perennial contender for Mother of the Year. But a sports fan she is not.

Watching distractedly as the Broncos were awarded the Super Bowl 50 trophy Sunday night, Sholeh frowned.

“What do the players on the other team get?” she asked.

Beg pardon?

“The Broncos get this huge trophy. What do the other guys get? They deserve something for have gotten this far.”

Because I value my marriage above everything else in my life, I will refrain from further comment on that particular discussion. But unlike Cam, I will use it to dive into the controversial and dangerous dogpile of postseason awards. You see, when you’re a Coeur d’Alene Press All-Star Pigskin Prognosticator, everybody walks away with something.

THE FINAL STANDINGS

1. Shawn Amos, Coeur d’Alene High School football coach. Selected charity: Jeff Hinz Cancer Fund. Record: 170-97. Prize: In addition to earning a place in history as the inaugural CDAPASPP champ, Shawn receives four half-page ads in the Press for his charity.

2. (tie) Jon Ness, Kootenai Health CEO. Selected charity: Court Appointed Special Advocates. Record: 169-98. Prize: Two half-page ads in the Press for his charity and a framed memo from the Seahawks reminding him that he would have won if he hadn’t picked against Seattle so often.

2. (tie) Rick Rasmussen, Northwest Specialty Hospital CEO. Selected charity: United Way of Kootenai County. Record: 169-98. Prize: Two half-page ads in the Press for his charity and a bitter pill to swallow, having tied his counterpart at Kootenai Health.

4. Kelly Nosworthy, Nosworthy’s Hall of Fame restaurant and bar. Selected charity: Matt’s Place Foundation. Record: 168-99. Prize: One half-page ad in the Press for his charity and a lot of Budweisers, compliments of his dad, Dale, and a commercial-minded Broncos QB.

5. Chris Carper, Paddy’s owner. Selected charity: Kootenai Health Patient Support. Record: 165-102. Prize: A St. Patty’s Day shamrock for better luck next time.

6. Ron Jacobson, Post Falls mayor. Selected charity: Post Falls Food Bank. Record: 162-105. Prize: A plaque installed in City Hall, commemorating the River City’s victory over Coeur d’Alene.

7. Mike White, Parker Toyota. Charity: Kootenai County Police & Fire Memorial Fund. Record: 161-106. Prize: An autographed portrait of his buddy, Jim Addis.

8. (tie) Steve Widmyer, Coeur d’Alene mayor. Charity: St. Vincent de Paul. Record: 158-109. Prize: One spring bowl with extra garlic from the White House restaurant in Post Falls delivered to Coeur d’Alene City Hall just before the next City Council meeting. Compliments of Ron Jacobson.

8. (tie) Van Troxel, former LCHS football coach. Charity: Jeff Hinz Cancer Fund. Record: 158-109. Prize: Almost unlimited free time after retiring from coaching and not having to fill out the damned Pigskin Prognosticators form every single week.

8. (tie) Al Williams, North Idaho College athletic director. Record: 158-109. Charity: North Idaho College Booster Club. Prize: A Big Al Burger at Nosworthy’s served by Joe Creetch, whose grandfather’s neighbor witnessed Chicago Bears great Bronko Nagursky lowering his head and running for a touchdown, only to knock himself out when he proceeded into a concrete wall. (“Boy that last guy hit hard,” Nagursky said.)

11. Mark Nelke, Press sports editor. Charity: Kootenai Humane Society. Record: 156-111. Prize: A media pass to the Raleigh Weiner Dog Races, the only place he’s got any chance to pick a weiner.

And last but certainly last (drumroll)...

12. Jim Addis, Lake City Ford. Charity: Boys & Girls Club of Kootenai County. Record: 152-115. Prize: Keys to a 1977 Toyota Corolla that needs work. And so will Jim if he ever tries to make a living betting NFL games.
