PREP BASKETBALL: Kootenai girls advance at districts

MULLAN — Sophomore Kaili Gentry scored 21 points as the No. 5 seed Kootenai Warriors beat the No. 4 seed Mullan Tigers 45-37 in the loser-out first round of the 1A District 1 Division II girls basketball tournament Tuesday night at the Mullan Pavilion.

Michaela LaFountaine added 13 points for Kootenai (8-12), which outscored Mullan 9-1 in the third quarter to pull away.

Kootenai will play top-seeded Lakeside on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the semifinals, as the tourney shifts to Kellogg High. No. 2 seed Genesis Prep faces No. 3 Clark Fork at 7:30 in the other semi.

Senior Charli Sadler had 19 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and three assists and Sina Schaefer 13 rebounds for Mullan, which finished 5-14.

“As a coach, I’m going to miss Charli on the court,” Mullan coach Sherry Leitz said. “She was a hardworking player and good leader.”

SANDPOINT — Kenny Louie-McGee had 17 points and three steals as the Timberwolves beat the Bulldogs in a nonleague game at Les Rogers Court.

Duncan Butler added nine points and nine boards and Kodie Kolden four points, six rebounds and three steals, helping the Timberwolves (6-13) jump out to a commanding 25-9 halftime lead. Lake City got to the line often, finishing 20 of 32 from the stripe.

Davan Norris scored a game-high 20 points, including four 3-pointers on 14 attempts, for Sandpoint (5-13).

On Saturday, Lake City hosts Moscow and Sandpoint visits Coeur d’Alene.

SPIRIT LAKE — Brayden Menti scored all 19 of his points in the final three quarters as the Tigers pulled into a tie for third place with the Spartans in the Intermountain League.

“He distributed the ball well, made good decisions, shot the ball well and played really good defense,” Timberlake coach Tony Hanna said of Menti.

Daniel Smith added 13 points for Timberlake (6-11, 1-4 IML).

Hunter Hartwig hit three 3-pointers and finished with 14 points for Priest River (6-12, 1-4), which made four 3s in the first quarter, but just one the rest of the way.

Timberlake plays host to Lakeland on Thursday.

PLUMMER — Zack Welch hit 6 of 9 3-pointers and finished with 24 points — 10 in the fourth quarter — as the visiting Miners pulled away from the Knights in North Star League play at Ron Miller Court.

Justin Bayer hit 3 of 3 3s in the fourth quarter, and tallied nine of his 14 points in the final quarter for the Miners (12-7, 7-2 NSL).

A.J. Bighead had 18 points and five rebounds for Lakeside (6-14, 4-5), which led 30-25 at halftime. Takoda Abrahamson added 15 points, and Bryar Sanchez had 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

“We were right there for three quarters,” Lakeside coach Butch Nomee said. “But we were shorthanded; a couple of kids were sick, and we ran out of gas.”

Next Tuesday, Lakeside travels to Kootenai, and Wallace hosts Clark Fork, to close out the regular season.
