PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Schoening, Kirscher help Sandpoint win 4A IEL title

SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint Bulldogs won the 4A Inland Empire League title outright for the third straight year on Saturday with a 49-29 victory over the Moscow Bears at Les Rogers Court.

Madi Schoening scored 28 points and Grace Kirscher added 17 points for Sandpoint (4-0, 12-9), which also shared the league title with Moscow in 2013.

“We struggled shooting in the first half,” Sandpoint assistant coach Will Love said. “Then we made a couple defensive adjustments and moved Madi (Schoening) and Grace (Kirscher) turned it on and that was the difference. We made five turnovers and they made 21.”

Moscow (9-9, 2-2) was led by Gracie Meyer, who scored 10 points.

Sandpoint is idle until the 4A Region 1 championship game Wednesday at North Idaho College, where the Bulldogs will face the winner of Monday’s game between Moscow and Lakeland at 8 at NIC.

DEARY — Kelsey Auer scored 12 points to go with nine rebounds, Kaylee Auer had 11 points and four blocks, spearheading the Lumberjacks to a first-round win in the 2A District 1-2 tournament.

“I thought we played really well all the way around,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines said. “We held them to five field goals in the game. We worked the ball well inside and out. We had a lot of balanced scoring.”

St. Maries (17-2) plays Grangeville on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Genesee in the semifinals. Devyn Wilson finished with seven points and nine rebounds, Madi Cordell had six steals and Paige Sines had five steals.

Kelly Ruebke scored eight points for Coeur d’Alene Charter (4-17), which plays Orofino on Monday at 6 at Genesee in a loser-out game.

CLARK FORK — The visiting Warriors jumped out to a 25-10 halftime league en route to the North Star League victory, but it was the Wampus Cats who came out in the best shape afterward.

Clark Fork (6-12, 3-7 NSL), Mullan (5-13, 3-7) and Kootenai (7-12, 3-7) finished in a three-way tie for third place in the league. In a coin flip to determine seeding to the 1A Division II District 1 tournament, Clark Fork won and will be the third seed. Mullan is the fourth seed, Kootenai the fifth.

Kootenai will play at Mullan on Tuesday at 6 p.m., with the winner playing top-seeded Lakeside on Thursday in the semifinals at Kellogg High.

Clark Fork will face No. 2 seed Genesis Prep in Thursday’s other semifinal.

Kaili Gentry scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds for Kootenai, and Grace McInturff finished with seven points, 13 rebounds and six steals.

Brooke Stevens had nine points, 10 rebounds and four steals for Clark Fork, Leslie Kiebert had nine points, seven boards and four steals, and Tessa Sutton had seven rebounds and four steals.

“We forgot to come out to play in the first half,” said Clark Fork coach Mark Stevens, whose squad trailed by as much at 17 points. “We got it within four, and ran out of time. Kootenai played good defense, but it was more us missing shots.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Maryssa Hogamier’s 10 points led a balanced attack as the visiting Miners defeated the Royals in nonleague play at Holy Family Catholic School.

Sammy Hill had 11 points, five assists and five steals for North Idaho Christian (12-14), and Kiera Holmes had eight points and 12 rebounds.

Next up for Wallace (16-3) is a District 1-2 play-in game on Thursday.

North Idaho Christian returns to action Friday at the Mountain Christian League tournament at Pullman Christian. The Royals, the No. 1 seed, will play either No. 4 Christian Center School or No. 5 Kootenai Thunder on Friday at 5:15 p.m. in the semifinals.
