PREP ROUNDUP: Hawks hold off Spartans in 3-pointer filled contest

RATHDRUM — Kaden Davis made four of his five 3-pointers, and scored 18 of his 23 points in the first quarter as the Lakeland Hawks started fast and held off the Priest River Spartans 62-56 in nonleague boys basketball Friday night at Hawk Court.

Andrew Knight hit three of his five 3s in the first half, and finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for Lakeland (7-11), which jumped out to a 23-6 lead after one quarter and finished with 10 3-pointers.

“In the first half in particular, we were moving the ball really well and finding the open guy,” Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said.

Andrew Jeter hit 4 of 7 3-pointers and led Priest River (6-11) with 19 points. Hunter Hartwig hit two 3s and added 16 points for the Spartans, who made 12 3-pointers.

Dylan Knight had five assists for Lakeland, which visits Timberlake on Thursday.

BONNERS FERRY — Posts Daniel Smith and Brandon Hausladen scored 17 and 15 points respectively, but the visiting Tigers had too big of a hill to climb in an Intermountain League loss to the Badgers.

Timberlake (5-11, 0-4 IML) trailed 29-14 at halftime.

“I thought they played physical and finished well when we got them the ball in the post,” Timberlake coach Tony Hanna said. “Other than that, we didn’t shoot well. Bonners hit some timely shots; they just knocked down shots when they needed them.”

Kaleb Stockton scored 15 points for Bonners Ferry (6-7, 3-1), which shot 54 percent from the field. Timberlake shot 44 percent.

Timberlake plays host to Priest River on Tuesday.

KELLOGG — Dominic Easley had 11 points, three assists and four steals and Toby Colburn had eight points and 15 rebounds, leading the Wildcats past the Lumberjacks in a nonleague game at Andrews Gymnasium.

Jake Sieler scored 21 points, hitting five 3-pointers for St. Maries (16-3), which entered the week as the top-ranked team in the state 2A boys basketball media poll.

“They had a couple of turnovers that we capatalized on,” Kellogg coach Jeff Lambert said. “It was a good win, and the kids are playing hard right now. St. Maries is a great team and played outstanding. We had pretty balanced scoring tonight, and that’s pretty tough to defend.”

Kellogg (14-3), ranked third in this week’s state 3A poll, hosts Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

St. Maries plays at Orofino next Friday.

Samuel Ogwuche added 11 points for Genesis Prep (14-4, 10-0 NSL), which plays at Coeur d’Alene Charter on Thursday.

Gryphon Todd scored 13 points for Mullan (0-12, 0-10), which returns to action Feb. 18 at the Kellogg ‘C team.

POST FALLS — Genesis Prep took care of business enough to lock up either a No. 2 or No. 3 seed for the 1A Division II District 1 tournament, routing Mullan in North Star League play at Post Falls Middle School.

“We took control from the beginning,” Genesis Prep coach Debbie Holte said. “They’re playing really well going into the playoffs. We’re looking forward to a good district tournament. We took care of business.”

Bella Murekatete finished with 20 points, 14 rebounds and five steals for the Jaguars (10-10, 4-6 NSL). Shaye Schreibeis made six 3-pointers and scored 20 points, and Rachel Schroeder had 11 points and seven assists.

Charli Sadler scored 20 points for Mullan (5-13, 3-7).

If Clark Fork beats visiting Kootenai today, the Jaguars will be tied for second with Clark Fork. They would then play Clark Fork in the district opener on Thursday at Kellogg High.

If Kootenai wins, Genesis Prep finishes alone in second place, and there would then be a three-way tie for third between Clark Fork, Kootenai and Mullan.

Bonners Ferry wins coin flip, third seed to 3A District 1 tournament

The Bonners Ferry Badgers won a coin flip with the Kellogg Wildcats and will open the 3A District 1 tournament as the No. 3 seed.

Bonners Ferry (6-11) will face No. 2 seed Priest River (12-7) on Monday at 4:30 p.m., followed by No. 1 Timberlake (18-1) against No. 4 Kellogg (10-9) at 6:15 at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene.

• WRESTLING

Timberlake 12th after first day at

Weiser Invitational

WEISER — All 12 wrestlers competing for the Tigers are in the consolation rounds after the first day of the Weiser Invitational.

Ryder Mervin (285 pounds), Reece Shaffer (160), ValJon Oldfield (145), Kayde Herbert (138) and Derek Galloway (126) won in the first round, but lost in the quarterfinals for Timberlake to finish the day 1-1.

Timberlake is 12th in the 15 team tournament with 15 points.

Caldwell leads with 87.5 points.
