COEUR d’ALENE — Both Lake City and Mountain Home had lengthy scoring runs in their Friday morning boys basketball matchup. But the Timberwolves had theirs at the right time.

Lake City closed out a 3-0 week at its holiday tournament with a 48-41 win over the Tigers, a win that gave the Timberwolves (7-1) as many wins as they had for the entire 2015-16 season, when they went 7-16.

“It’s nice ... last year was rough,” said senior Duncan Butler, who led Lake City with 17 points and 10 rebounds. “It’s nice to go 3-0 at our home tournament.”

The start of Friday’s game may have reminded the Timberwolves of last season. The Tigers (3-7) forced six turnovers and used the inside presence of 6-foot-6 post Tyrig Perry (15 points, eight rebounds) and the scoring ability of guard AJ Woodruff (15 points) to claim a 14-0 lead after six minutes.

“In the first half, we were really out of it in all aspects of the game,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “I thought — I hoped — we would come around and play like we can play, and eventually we did.”

Five points from guard Kodie Kolden pulled the T-Wolves within 27-17 at halftime, and after intermission, a switch to a trapping half-court defense helped slow down Mountain Home’s attack.

“We calmed down and just started to control things,” Butler said of the third quarter. “We had to block out and keep them from getting offensive rebounds.”

Hunter Schaffer’s 3-pointer at the end of the third period cut Lake City’s deficit to 36-31, and after a Woodruff basket to open the final quarter, the Timberwolves reeled off a 16-0 run to seize control of the game.

Lake City took its first lead as Kyle Manzardo split the Tiger defense for a layup, putting the hosts ahead for good, 39-38, with 5:30 remaining.

Butler’s putback basket, another 3-pointer from Schaffer and Manzardo’s steal and free throw put the Timberwolves ahead 48-38 with 2:15 left.

Manzardo, a junior wing, scored nine of his 10 points in the second half.

“Something made him mad, and gave him a spark,” Winger said of Manzardo. “I told (assistant coach) Kelly Reed, watch out, he’s going to really play now.

“What’s really good about this tournament is we had different kids step up in each game,” Winger added. “Kenny (Louie-McGee) and James (Carlson) were big for us last night, and today we had Duncan and Kyle lead us. And I thought Andrew (Womelduff) gave us a spark — he’s one of our top defenders.”
