ORV: Disneyland in paradise

| December 23, 2016 8:00 PM

To each their own, live and let live, rugged individualism, this is Idaho. But in this case, “Don’t tread on me” literally involves defending traditional rural values: slow winding roads past field and farm, bird songs with your morning coffee, elk bugling in the distance and neighbors who respect one another.

“Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” does not mean sacrificing a priceless natural recreational area and quality of life for the noise, traffic and dust of an “Off Road Disneyland.” The south end of Lake Pend Oreille is a world class recreational resource that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

The scenic vistas, deep cool waters and abundant wildlife make this truly a last best place that overshadows mankind’s best efforts to tame nature. Even during peak summer months, solitude can be found along the historic Boy Scout trail that winds it’s way up Bernard Peak. The current plan to build an off-road extravaganza in the middle of this paradise is a wrong-headed attempt that will be fought tooth and nail by not just local land owners but everyone who cherishes this natural wonderland. Don’t throw good money after bad ideas. This will not fly.
