NONPROFITS: Better oversight needed

| August 31, 2016 9:00 PM

I want to express my negative feelings toward the current rules for “Nonprofit Corporations.” There is no rule or regulation by the IRS for percentage of distribution. Some nonprofits distribute mere pennies on the dollar, while others have minimal operational expenses and most of their funds are distributed to their cause.

It is entirely up to each nonprofit as to what percentage of their donated funds goes for operational and administrative expenses. The IRS will even allow retention of funds (profit) carried over for future distribution. So it becomes a “let the contributor beware” situation.

You’ll notice that a large number of wealthy, influential and famous people establish their own nonprofits. Most are above board but current regulations allow for personal gain through administrative expenses and money laundering. There are numerous reasons for individuals and businesses to donate, but additionally these individuals can reduce their tax liability.

The Clinton Foundation is a nonprofit with lofty and admirable international goals. They’ve received millions from foreign countries, foreign and domestic businesses, and foreign and domestic personal interests. It’s understandable that domestic businesses and individuals donate, but what can be gained by foreign donations? The answer is political influence or money laundering. There needs to be an independent “forensic audit” of the Clinton Foundation to determine where these millions are going. Are they being funneled back to the Clintons or are they being used to buy influence via our representatives? These and many other questions need answers. However, this audit will never happen under Obama or a Clinton administration.

Corruption and influence peddling at all levels must be stopped. It should be illegal for political candidates to accept foreign contributions. Foreign contributions should include; other countries to federal candidates, other states to state candidates, other counties to county candidates, and other counties and cities to city candidates. “Outside interest money” should not be able to influence any election. PACs should have the same restrictions for donation and distribution.
