William T. Sweat, 84

William “Bill” Towle Sweat, 84, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016.

Bill was born Sept. 1, 1931, to Jack and Alice Marie (Stipe) in Colfax, Wash. He graduated from Colfax High School in 1949, and went on to receive Bachelor of Science degrees in mechanical engineering and physical metallurgy from Washington State University in 1956. Bill received a football scholarship and played as a linebacker for both the Army and Washington State.

In 1956, Bill began his long career in the mining industry with American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO). He joined ASARCO in 1956 as an engineer in training and retired from ASARCO in 1989 as Vice President of Engineering. During his career, he was granted patents for several innovations. In retirement, Bill enjoyed gardening, fishing, making wine, stained glass, woodworking and telling stories.

Bill is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Westover) of 57 years; children Lynda Spence, William Sweat, Julie Smith and Joe Sweat; his brother, Robert Sweat; and many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family. Bill was a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather and friend to all.
