PREP ROUNDUP: Fast start helps 'Jacks romp

ST. MARIES — Quarterback Kiefer Gibson threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in the St. Maries Lumberjacks’ 52-12 season-opening rout of the Kellogg Wildcats on Friday.

St. Maries running back Donaven Rottini scored three touchdowns as the Lumberjacks raced to a 27-0 lead after the first quarter. Jacob Sieler kickstarted their scoring with an 85-yard kickoff return.

“We had a really fast start and jumped on them early,” St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. “We did a good job maintaining their energy and came out strong.”

Kellogg scored on a 42-yard receiving touchdown by Quintin Kimberling and an eight-yard TD reception by Wolfgang Beier, both on passes from Raiden Rickets.

Next Friday, St. Maries plays at Riverside of Chattaroy (Wash.) and Kellogg hosts Medical Lake (Wash.).

COEUR d’ALENE — Ali Williams had eight kills and nine assists in Coeur d’Alene’s season opener, but Sentinel of Missoula was still able to defeat the Vikings, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19.

“They are a very strong program,” Coeur d’Alene coach Dee Pottenger said. “They took second at the Montana high school state tournament last season. This match was a great opportunity for us to see who we are right now and which specific areas need improvement. We had some great rallies and I’m proud of the effort of our girls. I’m excited about our potential.”

Elsa Goodwin and Shelby Schweyen each put away 11 kills for Sentinel on the home court of Coeur d’Alene.

Kelly Horning had two blocks and three aces, while Delaney Case added nine digs.

The Vikings’ match against Big Sky of Missoula was canceled due to a scheduling conflict.

The Vikings host Post Falls on Tuesday.

KELLOGG — Shelby Starr scored in the first minute, and the Tigers never looked back in the Intermountain League win over the Wildcats.

“The first two games this week (vs. Coeur d’Alene Charter and Lakeland) took a lot out of us, so we weren’t exactly playing at the level we wanted to, so we have to make some adjustments,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “Kellogg is much improved team.”

Kellogg, which was playing its season opener, visits Priest River on Monday.

Timberlake hosts Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM — The host Hawks took 13 shots on goal, but like the Cougars of Kalispell, Mont., were unable to find the back of the net in a scoreless draw at Sunrise Rotary Field.

“They defended us pretty hard and we had our chances to score,” Lakeland coach Dylan Stiegemeier said. “We just got a little unlucky and couldn’t find the back of the net. We played well, but were just a little tired from playing two straight days.”

Lakeland (1-2-1) travels to Lake City today.
