PREP ROUNDUP: Munday, Morris send Post Falls past Lakeland

RATHDRUM — Allison Munday had seven kills and Macky Morris had six kills to lead the Post Falls Trojans to a 25-12, 25-14, 25-13 win over the Lakeland Hawks in the season opener for both teams Thursday at Hawk Court.

Munday also had five digs, Kayla Mayo six aces and five digs and Courtney Finney 11 assists for Post Falls against Lakeland.

Later Thursday, Munday had 10 kills and Finney 16 assists in a 25-15, 25-9, 25-5 Post Falls win against Priest River.

“I’m really pleased with our effort today,” first-year Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “We were disciplined with our serving and serve receive, and the girls played with a lot of passion. This was a great way to start our season.”

Jalyn Mailhot had two kills, Kenna DeVore two digs and two assists, Brooke Mayberry two assists and Kate Hegbloom two blocks for Lakeland against Post Falls.

“It was a good game,” first-year Lakeland coach Adriano de Souza said. “Overall, we played a good game. We got out to a good start, but lost focus a little bit.”

Cassidy Jackson had five blocks and Morris eight digs against Priest River for Post Falls, which travels to Coeur d’Alene to open 5A Inland Empire League play on Tuesday.

In the third match of the night, Lakeland defeated Priest River 25-19, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20.

Mailhot had six kills, Madi Farris three blocks, Summer Powell six aces and Mayberry six assists for Lakeland (1-1), which hosts Bonners Ferry on Saturday.

“The girls played awesome,” de Souza said. “We had some times where we lost focus, but they worked a little harder and did a good job. We did a good job passing and serving and getting the ball to the back row.”

RATHDRUM — The Hawks broke open a close game in the second half, scoring three goals in the second half in a nonleague home win over the Badgers at Sunrise Rotary Field.

After Bonners Ferry cut an early Lakeland lead to 2-1 in the 50th minute, Cody Callahan scored in the 63rd minute for an insurance goal, on an assist by Dade McDevitt. McDevitt scored unassisted nine minutes later, then within the last minute Brandon Barber put a ball into the net to wrap up the scoring.

The Hawks (1-2) led 2-0 in the first half on goals by Noah Feusier and Barber. Lakeland outshot the Badgers 15-3 for the game.

“We’re looking to get a lot of kids into the game and move the ball around,” first-year Lakeland coach Dylan Stiegemeier said. “We did an all right job of that. We got the win, we played really hard.”

Lakeland hosts Stillwater Christian of Kalispell, Mont., today.

Timberlake whips Orofino, then Grangeville

OROFINO — Cody Bentley had four goals and an assist for the Tigers in a 9-1 Intermountain League win over the Orofino Maniacs, then scored 25 seconds into a 3-0 nonleague victory later in the day over the Grangeville Bulldogs at Orofino High.

“Our defense was much better than in the opener,” Timberlake coach Bert Bentley said. “We still need some help back there, but we were able to pretty much do whatever we needed to offensively. Grangeville was definitely a good match for us. They played really well for a team that just got going again. Our guys were getting extremely tired and couldn’t get anything going. We were just trying to get through the game and they definitely had their shots against us.”

Grangeville, which resumed its program this year, is playing as a 3A independent in soccer.

Denton Meijerink and Jestin Hoefer had two goals each for Timberlake against Orofino.

Timberlake (3-0, 1-0 IML) hosts Lakeland on Monday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Sophie Schnepf scored the eventual game-winner in the 76th minute as the Hawks beat the Tigers in a nonleague match between the district rivals.

“It was a great match,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “We didn’t come out on top, but it was a good night. We just came out really flat footed and they capitalized really quickly. We couldn’t catch up, but made some adjustments at halftime and started to play our game.”

Allison Kirby scored unassisted goals in the 70th and 74th minute to even the score at 2 for Timberlake.

“Allison had a chance to make some great runs,” Michael said. “We just didn’t finish the match.”

Morgan Cline also scored in the first half for Lakeland (1-1-1), which hosts Lake City on Saturday.

PRIEST RIVER — Abbie Taylor’s goal in the 49th minute put the Panthers ahead to stay in an Intermountain League victory over the Spartans.

“We really struggled getting going this game,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Being scored on first was a motivator. Players did better in the second half at beginning to connect. Their keeper was phenomenal, but we need to start putting away the opportunities we’re creating up top.”

Charter (2-1, 1-1 IML) travels to Bonners Ferry on Saturday.

Priest River is 1-1, 1-1.
