STRANDED: Some key questions

About STRANDED in the Saturday Aug. 20 Press. In the article you did not mention what was wrong with your boat. Mechanical failure, blown engine or just ran out of gas? Most of these problems can be avoided by proper and regular maintenance. I noticed in your picture only one of the children was wearing a PFD. Most important, where was your paddle? In case of emergency a paddle or two will get you back to shore.

Remember, emergency services are not there for you to have an excuse not to be prepared. It is up to you to be ready to handle whatever comes up. Just be thankful you were able to call someone to rescue you. I realize you were cold and uncomfortable, but you were afloat and safe. Where were your jackets? What would you have done in a real emergency?
