COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Havana Johnson scored two goals for the Lake City Timberwolves in a 4-0 win against the Sandpoint Bulldogs at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex on Tuesday.

“We came out a little slow and definitely had a lot of chances early,” said Lake City coach Matt Ruchti, whose team played its season opener after finishing runner-up in last year’s state 5A tournament. “We got organized in the second half and had the right attitude from kickoff, and it showed. We were able to connect a few different passes and make some plays. It was a good start to the season.”

Lily Scott had two assists for Lake City, which travels to Lakeland on Saturday.

Sandpoint is 0-1-1.

SPIRIT LAKE — Shelby Starr and Georgina Simpson scored unassisted goals for the Tigers in a win over the Panthers in the Intermountain League opener for both schools.

Coeur d’Alene Charter finished second at state in 3A last year, and Timberlake was third.

“It was a very close game, and one of the best we’ve had against them,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “We had our struggles defending them and they’re a lot faster than in year’s past. I don’t feel as if I had our team as prepared as I wanted them to be. We started three freshmen, but this was a good match for them to understand what we’re about.”

Keelie Lawler had five saves for Timberlake (1-0), which hosts Lakeland on Thursday.

“Keelie had some amazing saves tonight,” Michael said. “She really kept us in the game tonight and she was the difference for us.”

Eliason Cherstrom scored in the 64th minute for Coeur d’Alene Charter (1-1), which travels to Priest River on Thursday.

“You know you’re going to get a tough game from Timberlake,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “We knew we had to match their physicality and strength, especially in the middle of the field. We knew we could match their speed up top and in the back and we did. Knowing that we didn’t have all of our rostered players available, I’m content in how we played the game. We created the type of opportunities we knew we could with this team, we just didn’t finish in front of the goal how we needed to in order to be on top at the end of 80 minutes. It’s early, and we look forward to getting to play a talented group like Timberlake again.”

First half — 1, TL, Shelby Starr (unassisted), 35:00. Second half — 2, TL, Georgina Simpson (unassisted), 55:00. 3, Charter, Eliason Cherstrom (Brooklyn Cunningham), 64:00.

Shots on goal — Charter 5, TL 6.

Saves — Charter, Rachel Callister, 9; TL, Keelie Lawler, 5.

“It was a close match,” first-year Lakeland coach Dylan Stiegemeier said. “We played well for some moments, and not so well in others. We’re still looking to put together a full 80 minutes, but we played well. It was a good match and we did some things better.”

PRIEST RIVER — Lumberjack Diego Papetti scored in the 24th minute, but Corbin Malta scored the equalizer in the 43rd minute for the Spartans in an Intermountain League draw.

“It was a hard fought match between two evenly matched teams with both having opportunities to gain the go-ahead goal,” Priest River coach Rob Lawler said. “It was a very tense match from beginning to end. We are looking forward to meeting them again later this season.”

Zach Hills had nine saves for St. Maries (1-0-1, 1-0-1 IML), which plays at the Lake City JV on Thursday.

“It wasn’t a bad game,” St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. “Both teams had plenty of opportunities. It was close, it could’ve gone either way.”

“We came out in the second half, it wasn’t what we expected what happened,” Renaldo said. “They broke loose and scored. At halftime I said, ‘We can’t leave this guy unmarked, he can score. Four minutes in, he scored.”
