ST. MARIES — After 17 years, whether that be in the regular season or postseason, the ball had always bounced the way of the Bonners Ferry Badgers when it came to playing the St. Maries Lumberjacks on the soccer field.

With the new season starting for area high school teams, why not a new beginning to that story as well.

Sophomore Matt Masterson scored two goals in the second half as the Lumberjacks beat the Badgers for the first time in program history 3-0 in the Intermountain League and season opener for both at City Park.

“We’ve played them usually at least three times a year, but it’s been a number of times they’ve beaten us,” said St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo, who began his 18th season at the helm with the win. “The flow of play was in their favor the entire game. It’s just nice to get a win. I think we’ve got a young team this year. A lot of these kids quite frankily, weren’t even born yet when we started playing them. I think this means more to me than these kids.”

Stephen Davenport had a goal and assist for St. Maries, which travels to Priest River on Tuesday.

The Lumberjacks held the Badgers without a shot on goal in the match.

After falling to 5A Rocky Mountain High of Meridian on Friday night, the Bulldogs (1-1) flashed some of the firepower that will make them a force in the 4A ranks, handling Vallivue, which dropped from 5A to 4A this year. Vallivue’s only goal came on a penalty kick, the third the Bulldogs have yielded in two games.

Coeur d’Alene 2

COEUR d’ALENE — Rachel Brendis scored in the 33rd minute to give the Vikings an early advantage, but a goal by Casey Shaha in the 68th minute was the difference as the Bulldogs rallied for a draw in the nonleague opener for both schools.

“We were trying a new formation that put a lot of pressure on the defense and got us two goals,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “We should have made a tactical change for the second half, but we just got tired and they took advantage of that.”

Megan Drake scored in the 30th minute on an assist from Brendis for Coeur d’Alene, which hosts Moscow on Saturday.

“For a first game of the season and a formation they’ve never played, I thought our girls held their own really well,” Vredenburg said. “I saw a lot of good things. We’ll just continue to build on those. It was a good start and we’ll go from there.”

Riley Walkington also scored for Sandpoint.

“It was an incredible turnaround,” Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski said. “I was really impressed with how the girls responded. Defensively, midfield, attack, just better all around in second half.”

Mills coached for nine seasons at 3A Kellogg, and was the JV coach at Post Falls in 2015 before moving to the varsity job last spring.

“There are more girls and there’s a little bit better-developed players,” Mills said of the difference coaching girls at the 5A level. “But the game’s still the game. I think we’ve got some things to work on. But overall, we played some really good ball.”

Colosimo struck first in the ninth minute, on a through ball by Cierra Foster directly up the middle. Then Colosimo scored again seven minutes later, on a direct kick.

Post Falls plays at Moscow on Wednesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Izzy Lehosit recorded a hat trick for the Panthers in a season opening win against the Bulldog junior varsity on Friday at Community United Methodist Church on Friday.

Brooklyn Cunningham had two goals for Coeur d’Alene Charter, which opens Intermountain League play at Timberlake on Tuesday.

“We had a tough beginning to the first half,” first-year Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Players were making the right decisions, we just couldn’t connect passes. We finally began to put away the opportunities we were creating.”
