Bayley rallies for runner-up

finish at Washington Amateur

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Chase Carlson of Puyallup tapped in an 18-inch birdie putt on the sixth playoff hole to win the 90th Washington men’s amateur championship on Thursday after former Lakeland High and rising Washington State junior Derek Bayley’s five-foot birdie putt had lipped out at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club.

Bayley began the day six strokes behind the leader, and carded seven birdies and after curling in an 18-foot birdie on the 15th hole, led the tournament by two strokes. His 4-under par 68 was the best round of the day.

VICENZE, Italy — After leading the majority of the game, the Washington State men’s basketball team saw its lead disappear late in the fourth quarter as it fell 67-58 to Vicenze Select on Thursday at Palazzetto del Sport.

Senior Josh Hawkinson recorded his second-straight double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. The Cougars drop to 2-1 on their five-game tour of Italy. Senior Charles Callison and junior Derrien King each added 10 points while Callison had a team-high 3 steals and King added 8 rebounds.

Andrea Galiazzo led Vicenze Select with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals, as he was named the team’s MVP.
