Mental health evaluation ordered for Odom
Kootenai County Judge Anna Eckhart has ordered a mental health evaluation for Kyle Odom, accused of shooting a Coeur d’Alene pastor six times in March.
The order was made Wednesday, the same day the Kootenai County Prosecutor’s Office filed a motion to determine if Odom was competent to stand trial. The trial’s preliminary hearing scheduled for today will be rescheduled.
Odom is charged with aggravated battery for allegedly shooting Tim Remington outside Altar Church following a Sunday morning service. Remington survived and has since returned to work.
The 30-year-old Odom, who has a history of mental illness, wrote a 30-page manifesto explaining how “an intelligent species of amphibian-humanoid from Mars” and how Remington was under their mind control.
Odom could be sentenced to as many as 15 years in prison if convicted. He is in the Kootenai County jail on a $500,000 bond.
