BOATING: A safety refresher

| August 7, 2016 9:00 PM

I grew up in Coeur d’Alene and now live in Portland. This is my second visit this summer and in the wake of last week’s lake tragedy it would seem a perfect time to publish in the paper, rules for boaters.

Many people are unskilled renters of watercraft, new watercraft owners, those who use watercraft infrequently, and those who choose to disregard the rules. It would seem beneficial to list general rules for boaters such as MPH during day and night, personal flotation device rules and usage, appropriate lighting on boats, and the use of ski spotters in boats. On my two visits this summer I have witnessed on several occasions, people tubing, skiing and wake boarding after dark which is not only dangerous but I would think, illegal?

This lake is such a beautiful and magical place. A printed reminder to all of us who enjoy the area will help to keep it a happy place rather than a place to grieve those lost in accidents.
