Injecting new life. Millions get anti-aging treatments on their faces annually
Thousands of women in North Idaho hope you notice their smooth silky looking skin without knowing their secret — they receive regular cosmetic injections to their face and lips.
Paula is one of them.
“I am 66 and I wanted to slow down the aging process just a tad,” she said. “A whole lot of women get them done; their friends just don’t know about it.”
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimates that 6.8 million Americans received Botox or Dysport treatments in 2015, a slight increase over the previous year. Both solutions contain small amounts of botulinum type A, which effectively relaxes facial muscles that lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
“These can wipe 10 years off your face within minutes of being applied,” said Linda Owsley, a baccalaureate-prepared registered nurse at Owsley Plastic Surgery in Coeur d’Alene. “I am seeing younger patients all the time. Twenty-five-year-olds are one of the fastest growing demographics.”
Today’s injectables temporarily eliminate wrinkles, improve volume of tissue under the skin and give women a more youthful appearance, said Owsley. She prefers Dysport to Botox.
Most Dysport patients are women, but a few men get them, said Owsley. Another popular option for women is volume fillers. These help reverse some of the muscle and structural changes that occur with aging.
“As we age our natural fat pads shrink and sag, and we experience bone and muscle loss, all contributing to volume loss,” said Owsley. “The various filler products work to replace that volume and provide lift instantaneously.”
Here’s what the injectables can help with:
Vertical lines between the eyebrows known as frown lines
Fine lines that appear in the outer corners of the eyes
Horizontal creases across the forehead
Thin vertical lines that appear above the lip line
Volume replacement throughout the face
Fuller lips and correction of marionette lines around the mouth
Cheeks and earlobes
A treatment takes about 30 minutes to perform and the pain is minimal, said Owsley.
“We use a very small needle and the patients barely feel it,” she said. “There can be a little swelling, but many women say their husbands have no idea they had a treatment.”
The costs range from $200 to $3,000 per procedure — depending on the volume injected.
“It’s not cheap,” said Paula. “I think it’s money well spent.”
For Paula, the proof is in the reactions she gets from her family and friends.
“My daughter is my touchstone and she’s very direct about things. She says she can tell because I am her mom, but she says I look very natural.”
Paula said she gets Dysport treatments every four months and a collagen restorative product called Sculptra. She started getting the procedures about two years ago.
“It’s not painful at all,” she said. “It’s important to know that you can’t just get one treatment. You have to get regular upkeep. My only regret is that I wish I had started sooner.”
