Bonners Ferry sweeps Timberlake, moves into first place in IML

| April 24, 2016 10:00 PM

BONNERS FERRY — Vince Bennett struck out seven and walked one in a complete game three-hitter in the first game as the Bonners Ferry Badgers swept the Timberlake Tigers 2-0 and 10-1 in Intermountain League play on Saturday.

Nick Sabin doubled to score Caleb Blackmore in the fourth inning of the first game for Bonners Ferry.

“Vince did a great job of keeping them off balance all day,” Bonners Ferry coach Tom Turpin said. “We were able to hit the ball at them most of the game. (Derek) Galloway pitched really strong, but we were just able to get the bat on the ball in the fourth. It was a good all-around, well played game for both teams.”

In the nightcap, Kevin Gray went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and Sabin went 3 for 3 with three RBIs for the Badgers (15-2, 5-0).

“We did a good job of getting the bats going in the second game,” said Turpin, whose team jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. “We had four hits in that inning, keyed by Sabin’s two-run single and Gray’s two-run double, and it kind of sparked us moving forward.”

On Tuesday, Bonners Ferry visits Priest River and Timberlake (7-10, 3-2) plays at Kellogg.

LEWISTON — Senior Kaleb Reid singled to scored Jarred Hall with the go-ahead run with two out in the top of the eighth inning, lifting the Timberwolves past the Bengals in the first game of a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Saturday at Church Field.

Reid finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs for Lake City, which held Lewiston scoreless in the final three innings for the win.

“I was real impressed with our pitching,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “(Starting pitcher) Nathan (Phillips) did a fabulous job of keeping them off balance and pounding the zone. He really did a good job of pitching to contact and Cody (Garza) came in the sixth inning and did a great job of holding the lead. They just did a good job of competing and threw in a drizzle all afternoon. It was real wet, but they threw great.”

In the nightcap, Lewiston beat Lake City 5-3.

“We just didn’t get the big hit when we needed a big hit,” Manzardo said. “Both Dominic (Conigliaro) and Brett (Stapleton) pitched real well and kept their count real low. (Lewiston starting pitcher Jake) Munoz threw a real good game and did what he needed to do to get the win. He threw some big pitches when he needed it. We had some errors late, but it is what it is. We’ll regroup and go from there.”

Conigliaro had four hits in the second game, Tanner Criswell two RBIs and Brandon Stapleton an RBI single for Lake City (10-6, 3-3 5A IEL), which hosts Coeur d’Alene in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
