Rathdrum to host mock urban search Sunday

RATHDRUM — Local search and rescue teams will take training to another level on Sunday in Rathdrum.

Kootenai County and Spokane County Search and Rescue teams will conduct a mock search using urban tactics between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The search teams have typically trained in backcountry environments, but will receive urban training this time.

Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Will Klinkefus said it has been at least 10 years since such training has been held in this county.

"Urban searches are increasing due to a myriad of situations from Alzheimer's patients to small kids getting lost," he said.

The search teams obtained permission from the Rathdrum City Council for the training. Fliers have also been distributed around the city to create awareness.

Lakeland High School will serve as the command post, so there will be emergency vehicles parked there. Signs will be posted that a mock training is being conducted.

Searchers will also be combing neighborhoods throughout the city looking for their "lost" person. They will go door to door to homes of resident volunteers looking for clues to find their "missing" person.

Rathdrum Mayor Vic Holmes said the city is proud to host the training and some staff will observe it to prepare for real-life scenarios. Rathdrum has also hosted large-scale disaster training exercises in the past.
