PREP ROUNDUP: T-Wolves, Trojans split in baseball

COEUR d’ALENE — Cody Garza shined in the first game for Lake City, and Preston Benson was a tough out all day for Post Falls as the Timberwolves and Trojans split a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader Tuesday at Lake City.

Lake City won the opener 16-8, and Post Falls took the nightcap 12-6.

Garza went 4 for 4 in the opener for Lake City (8-5, 2-2 5A IEL), with two doubles, three runs and an RBI. Jarred Hall was 3 for 4 with a double for the T-Wolves.

“We hit the ball well, and were able to capitalize with big hits in the middle of our order,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said of the first game. “We put pressure on them in every inning but the sixth.”

Benson, the leadoff hitter, was 6 for 7 on the day for Post Falls (11-5, 1-3) and scored four runs, three in the second game.

“He had a good approcgh at the plate,” Manzardo said. “He was spraying the ball all over the field; he was a tough out for us.”

Lake City travels to Freeman today for a 4 p.m. tilt. Post Falls plays a doubleheader at Coeur d’Alene on Saturday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Jerrett Plunkett doubled, tripled, drove in four runs and picked up the win in relief for the Tigers in an Intermountain League win against the Spartans.

Four others had two hits each for Timberlake (7-8, 3-0 IML), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Saturday. Bonners (3-0 IML) defeated Kellogg (0-3) 19-6 on Tuesday.

“We hit the ball extremely well today, even the off-speed stuff,” Timberlake coach Matt George said. “Our hitting is what kept us ahead. Without our hot bats today, we could have been in real trouble.”

Thomas Hauck scored Braxton Tonkin on a suicide squeeze for the go-ahead run in the fourth inning for Timberlake.

Priest River is 0-3 in league.

COEUR d’ALENE — Bailey Cavanagh’s two-run homer in the fifth inning of the first game broke a 2-all tie, and the Timberwolves went on to sweep the Trojans in 5A Inland Empire League play.

Heather Hawkes went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the second game for Lake City (11-2, 4-0 5A IEL). Emma Gray was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs in the second game for the T-Wolves.

“Bailey Cavanagh, Emma Gray, and Heather Hawkes had a great day at the plate for us,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “In the first game, Reilly Williams took a pitch off the elbow to pave the way for Bailey Cavanagh to break the 2-2 tie with a bomb, paving the way to a nice first game lead and victory.”

Casey Goleeke and Bailey Gleaves each had four hits on the day for Post Falls (6-6, 0-6). Brooke Bowers homered in the second game for the Trojans.

“Post Falls is much improved in all aspects, and put us in some situations where we had to work through them,” Lenz said. “I am very pleased with my team’s progress this far as we work through league play.”

Lake City travels to Lewiston on Saturday for a doubleheader. Post Falls returns to action next Tuesday at home vs. Lewiston in a doubleheader.

SPIRIT LAKE — Glori Cheevers drove in four runs and Shelby Salois went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, leading the Tigers past the Spartans in an Intermountain League game.

“We just did a good job of being picky with the pitch selection again,” Timberlake coach Casi Reisenauer said. “If they weren’t getting the pitch they wanted, they took a walk. We’ve just been working on being really patient.”

Brittany Hibdon struck out four for Timberlake (6-1, 3-0 IML), which plays at Genesee on Thursday.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Post Falls boys swept in singles to beat the Vikings at Coeur d’Alene High.

Coeur d’Alene’s girls swept in girls doubles.

“Hannah (Johnson) and Kayla (Fagan) played some great tennis today,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Laura Taylor said. “It was the best I’ve seen them play all season. Lauren (Carlsen) and Sara (Switer) played great and Kim (Gunnerson) got another big win for us in girls singles.”

On Thursday, Lake City’s girls visit Coeur d’Alene and Lake City’s boys host Coeur d’Alene.
