Joseph Sokol Sr., 96

| April 9, 2016 9:00 PM

Joseph Sokol Sr., 96, now rests in the arms of his maker.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, five children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who live in Eastern USA.

Joe was born and raised in Pennsylvania, first generation American of Polish parents and the youngest of nine children. During World War II, he served with the 21st Engineer Aviation Regiment, in charge of crews building runways in Italy and North Africa; he was honorably discharged as a 1st Sergeant. He also was on the Army’s International basketball team, enjoying competitions with other Armed Service teams as well as teams in Europe and Africa.

His love of wide open spaces brought Joe and his family to Colorado in the 1950s, then to Idaho in the late ’60s. Weekends were spent exploring mountain lakes, fishing or hunting. As a bricklayer and stone mason, he has left his skilled fingerprints on many buildings and homes in the area.

He lived his life honoring his country, loving his family, enjoying the outdoors and working hard. His quick wit, the sparkle in his eyes and his warm smile will be remembered by all who met him.

At his request, his cremated remains will be scattered in Soldier’s Field at the Washington Veterans’ Cemetery. There will be a private memorial service to celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice House of North Idaho.
