Mail thefts reported in Harrison area
The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office responded to several reports of mail theft and damaged mailboxes in rural areas surrounding Harrison earlier this week.
Of the 10 victims who filed reports, some reported their mailboxes had been pried open and nothing stolen, while others reported items missing.
The KCSO currently has no suspects for the crimes, but believes it may be someone who works in the area during the daytime.
Anyone who suspects their mail has been stolen in the Harrison area in the past few days, or has seen suspicious individuals or vehicles in the area, are asked to call the sheriff's office at 446-1300.
Several steps can be taken to help stop mail theft, which include removing any obstacles blocking the mailbox from view, making sure the mailbox closes tightly and cannot blow open in the wind, and installing a mailbox chime or alarm that is monitored from inside the house.
Getting rid of paper- and mail-based banking and credit transactions is another way to keep your identity safe from thieves. Choose an online option whenever possible for banking, credit and utility bills.
Make it a habit to check the mailbox often. Have neighbors or someone trustworthy remove the mail from the box if you plan to be away for any length of time, or the post office can be alerted to hold the mail until you return. If you suspect your mail has been stolen, monitor your credit report to determine if any new accounts have been opened in your name. Switch to a post office box for important mail if needed.
