RATHDRUM — Cameron Luckey drove in four runs and Cameron Nosworthy and Noah Mayfield scored two runs each, leading the Coeur d’Alene Vikings past the Lakeland Hawks 12-2 in a nonleague game on Tuesday at Gorton Field.

“It was a good day for us with timely hitting and scored eight runs with two outs,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “Timely hitting and playing good defense seem to be our M.O. this season. All in all, it was a good day considering we’ve been away for a week.”

Nathaniel English and Jonny Plum had two RBIs each for Coeur d’Alene (6-3), which hosts East Valley on Thursday.

Jared McDaniel had an RBI in the second inning for Lakeland (3-5), which hosts Timberlake on Thursday.

“Coeur d’Alene executed well in all phases of the game and outplayed us today,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “We committed five errors, and you can’t do that against good teams, or they’ll make you pay. That’s exactly what they did. Every time we’d make a mistake defensively, they would capatalize on it offensively.”

St. Maries (1-4) opened a 5-1 lead after three innings and scored five in the top of the sixth to put the game away.

“We started to string some hits together in the third and had a good day stealing bases,” St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. “That helped to get some guys in scoring position and we were able to take advantage of some walks and errors. It was a pretty balanced and good team effort.”

St. Maries plays at Orofino on Friday.

RATHDRUM — Mariah Montee and Jane Wilkey scored two runs each and Breana Burke struck out 15, leading the Vikings past the Hawks in a nonleague game.

“Overall, it didn’t go bad, but we couldn’t get our bats going,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. “We didn’t get our bats going like we normally do. Coeur d’Alene’s a really good team and (Burke) is a good pitcher. They put the pressure on us. I was really proud of my defense and Kari (Prockish) did a great job pitching. The hits we got were good, but we just had trouble stringing them together.”

Wilkey homered leading off the second inning for Coeur d’Alene (5-0), which opens 5A Inland Empire League play at Post Falls on Friday in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.

POST FALLS — Bailey Gleeves and Brook Bowers each went 3 for 3 in the opening game, with Bowers hitting a solo home run of the Trojans’ nonleague sweep of the Bears at Post Falls High.

Alexis Demute also homered for Post Falls, which saw starting pitcher Amanda Rouse strike out six in the win.

“We hit the ball really well and played solid defense,” Post Falls coach Brian Stranger said. “We had a couple of errors, but it was a great team effort.”

In the nightcap, Casey Goleeke went 3 for 3 with a triple and double and Kelsey Horn scored three runs for Post Falls (6-0), which hosts Coeur d’Alene in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both on Friday at 3 p.m.

Rouse pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight in the win.

“Our offense this year has been great so far,” Stranger said. “But we’ve got a big test coming up. We’ve been putting runs on the board, but now we’ve got to prove we can do it against the teams in our league. We’re playing good ball right now though.”
