Have fair food, will deliver

| September 23, 2015 2:58 PM

Dane Dugan just wrapped up a successful North Idaho Fair and Rodeo under his watch as fairgrounds manager so he took a little road trip to visit his 76-year-old grandmother, Janet Oertli, in Eugene, Ore.

His grandma is unable to travel so she has never enjoyed a fair that Dane has managed. Her grandson brought the fair to her instead. The pair enjoyed chili dogs and ice cream and Dane even brought some carnival toys to her in the assisted living home. What a good grandson; next time he should bring an elephant ear and North Idaho beer balls!

Hard for me to imagine that in both of my grandmothers’ lifetimes, women in this country did not have the right to cast a ballot on election day.

The ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution took place 95 years ago, and to commemorate the anniversary a special presentation will be held tomorrow at the monthly meeting of the Kootenai County Republican Women, noon at IHOP in Coeur d’Alene. "Soldiers in Petticoats, The Struggles of the Suffragettes" features Tames Alan, renowned historian. For information on attending, contact Marge Chadderdon at 769-7309.

Good luck to Shannon Dryden, Kimberly Hutchins, Kehra Pennington and Cassy Ripatti in their quest to become the next Miss North Idaho Fair and Rodeo. On Saturday their horsemanship will be judged in the main rodeo arena at 9:30 a.m. followed by a social reception and silent auction at 3 p.m. in Building 3 that will include speeches, modeling, awards and crowning. The public is invited to all events.

Super Sunday this week will have nothing to do with football when a total lunar eclipse overlaps with a Super Moon — aka blood moon. The last time it occurred was 32 years ago and the next time we’ll see it is 2033. The total eclipse starts at 7:11 p.m. PDT Sunday evening and will last one hour and 12 minutes — which is good news for those of us who have a hard time staying awake until the wee hours of the night.
