HORSES: Drafting fans of big beasts

| September 18, 2015 9:00 PM

If you’re one of those people who loves to wander through the draft horse barn at the North Idaho Fair, there’s an event coming up that you may want to attend. It’s the 39th (yes — 39th!) annual Idaho Draft Horse and Mule Show at the Bonner County Fairgrounds Sept. 25-27. (Think of the horses in the Budweiser Hitch times 30!) It’s a great place to spend a day in a lovely autumn setting, check out the animals in the barns and enjoy some family time!

There are various competitions including 4-Abreast (four across — they barely fit through the gates!); the Unicorn Class (one animal hitched directly in front of the other); the Farm Team Class (a team pulling actual farm implements that have been used in the fields!); Junior Team Driving (youngsters as young as 5 driving a team); and the multiple team competitions: four, six and eight horses/mules all hitched to a show wagon and wearing fancy show harness! This event is truly a celebration of the heritage that built America!
