COEUR d'ALENE - Saturday will mark the seventh birthday for the Coeur d'Alene Public Library's moose and mouse, Mudgy and Millie.

Though it's unknown how old Mudgy and Millie actually are, they were born out of a love of books, active living, public art, and the community of Coeur d'Alene.

The animal pair's fans of all ages are invited to a party in the Community Room at Coeur d'Alene Public Library on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Children's author Susan Nipp created Mudgy and Millie in her book about their adventures.

Nipp, who is a member of the Library Foundation Board, signed over all royalties from the sale of the book and related merchandise to the foundation.

"Mudgy & Millie" follows the adventure of its moose and mouse characters as they play hide and seek along a route that leads from Tubbs Hill, to the library, through downtown, around the boardwalk, to Coeur d'Alene City Park and finally to Independence Point at the steps.

The author, a strong proponent of families staying active together, worked with the city of Coeur d'Alene to create the Mudgy Trail, which follows this same route.

Inspired by the bronze statues in Boston created for the book "Make Way for Ducklings," Nipp worked with local sculptor Terry Lee to create the five life-size bronze statues installed along the trail.

"It's hard to believe that Mudgy and Millie are seven already, but we are excited to celebrate," said Bette Ammon, the library director. "We have a great party every year."

The celebration will include a reading of the book by Nipp, a special appearance by Mudgy Moose and Millie Mouse, a sing-along of the "Mudgy & Millie Song," book signing by Nipp and Lee and a birthday cake compliments of The Coeur d'Alene Resort.

"The cake is going to be gigantic," Ammon said. "So we will have plenty of delicious cake for everyone who comes."

Ammon said the event is a great time for parents to get their kids involved in the library.

"You can sign up for card, check out books and learn about falls programs," Ammon said. "We just love seeing kids in the library, we know their library card is their most important ticket to learning."

There is no charge to attend the party. Copies of the book will be available for purchase along with Mudgy & Millie plush animals. All proceeds benefit the Library Foundation. For more information call (208) 769-2315 or visit cdalibrary.org.
