A special menu with European specialties is featured at the Wine Grotto Cafe, now open with the Corner Store & Deli at 702 E. Prairie Ave. in Hayden.

New owners Dirk and Kim Van Der Kolk bring many years of culinary and "people" backgrounds to the restaurant, which has tables inside and outside. He earned a culinary degree in Holland and owned the Wooden Shoe European restaurant in Post Falls. She had the Bridal Path Manor bed and breakfast in Hayden.

The Wine Grotto menu offers schnitzel, German sausage plates, goulash, chicken marsala, coq au vin and specialties of bouillabaisse, paella and chateaubriand for two or more with prior reservations. They also offer favorites from previous owners Hans and Linda Paul such as prime rib, spaghetti and meatloaf.

The Corner Store & Deli has fresh sandwiches, daily specials of soups and salads, quiche, cookies, cakes, muffins, many beers and wines and European market and hostess gifts.

Wine Grotto reservations are encouraged. Hours are 10 a.m. to closing Tuesday through Saturday. Phone 762-3123.

Pinot's Palette opens soon

Just-for-fun painting classes with local beers and wine will be offered at Pinot's Palette. The new business should open soon at 728 N. Fourth St., a former photo studio next to Kelly's Irish Pub and across from Capone's.

Owners Jackie Casey and partner Jeff Hansen plan to offer four public classes a week taught step-by-step by professionals. Private events such as date nights, girls-night-out, team building, corporate events and birthday parties can be any time.

Pinot's Palette started in Houston in 2009 and now has 137 studios in 33 states. Casey also has a studio in Spokane, and others are coming soon to Tri-Cities and Tacoma.

"When living in Oklahoma, I went to a Pinot's Palette with a group of girlfriends and had a blast," she said. "I couldn't believe what I painted, as I'm not an artistic person. It's amazing what you can do when someone walks you through step by step. It's an empowering feeling, and to have a blast doing it. Now I get to tell people that I sell fun for a living."

- A "Coming Soon" sign is at 1116 Ironwood Drive (former home of The Coeur d'Alenes and Sunshine Trader restaurants) for Pepe Caldo Pizzeria, moving from 1606 N. Fourth St.

- Some group needs to adopt the litter pickup on Kathleen Avenue from Atlas to Ramsey. It's a mess.

- Check www.missingmoney.com. It could be interesting and worth it.

- There's no egg in eggplant, no ham in hamburger or apple or pine in pineapple.

- The intersection of Seltice Way and Atlas Road could use a traffic light. Seltice Way being split by an island between the two four-lane roadways really helps.
