PREP VOLLEYBALL: Coeur d'Alene captures Lakeland Invitational

| September 13, 2015 9:00 PM

RATHDRUM - Coeur d'Alene won the Lakeland Invitational on Saturday, defeating University High of Spokane Valley 25-21, 25-18 in the championship match of the gold bracket.

The Vikings beat Lake City in the semifinals 25-21, 27-25.

"This is a well-run tournament with some strong teams in it," Coeur d'Alene coach Dee Pottenger said. "Playing today gave us the opportunity to work on some specific areas of focus. I'm proud of the commitment our girls are giving to getting better every time we play. They set a goal in the preseason to win this tournament and I'm proud of the way they earned it."

Lake City and Post Falls tied for third overall. The Trojans went 3-2 in the tourney, losing to University 25-7, 25-13 in the semis.

Mackenzie Morris and Kayla Mayo each had 18 kills in the tourney for Post Falls. Sam Hammond had 30 assists, Cassidy Jackson 12 blocks, Morris 7 aces, Jenna Gardner 30 digs.

Junior Laney Search did a little bit of everything to help Sandpoint place sixth among 24 teams as the Bulldogs (8-8) went 4-2 in what Sandpoint coach Erin Roos called a really great tournament for her squad.

"The girls showed a lot of grit and composure today. We fought back when we were behind, we stayed confident and aggressive and we were definitely playing to win," said Roos, whose young team continues to make big strides. "It was nice to beat Post Falls, and we played better in another tough match with Lake City."

Kayla Neumann added 45 kills and 59 digs, Grace Kirscher 15 kills and 10 blocks, Ali Creighton 22 kills and Cheyenne Nicholson 23 digs and 11 aces on the day for Sandpoint.

"Rylee Darling and Kayla Neumann had a great passing day and Cheyenne and Laney served people off the court," praised Roos. "Our middles (Kirscher and freshman Grace Hicks) had a huge day of growth, it's exciting to watch them get better."

Kelsey Auer had 63 assists and four blocks, Kari Ghramm 35 kills, Lauryn Hill 14 digs and Kaylee Auer had four blocks for St. Maries, which lost in the semifinals of the bronze division.

"We had a lot of really tough matches," St. Maries coach Amy Scheer said. "We started the day out kind of slow, but the last match of the day was the best we'd played all day. It was a great learning experience and helps us get prepared for league starting on Tuesday."
