LIARS: Show gets villain right

| September 11, 2015 9:00 PM

This is in response to the article in the Entertainment section about ABC Family’s portrayals of the gay and lesbian community from Sept. 5. While I would be the first to give a yippee to the progress the TV networks have made in giving a voice to the LBGT community, I feel GLAAD I missed the point of the “Pretty Little Liars” season finale.

As someone who has watched all the episodes of the show, I saw the significance of who they choose to be the villain in what is revealed in the season six finale. She was mentally ill because of who her FAMILY was, not because of her gender orientation. I feel that the concept that she was made a villain because of her being transgender was taken out of context by GLAAD. If you were to watch the show from start to finish, you can see where the villain got her craziness from…her parents (especially her mother).

I believe it is important to show both sides of a person when it comes to a show like this, as they did. Even someone who is gay, transgender, or a lesbian can be a bad person without their gender being a factor in any way. The show did an excellent job of showing this and I applaud the writers, producers and the cast of “Pretty Little Liars” for the way they portrayed such a sensitive topic.
