RATHDRUM — Cody Callahan scored two goals to rally the Lakeland Hawks back from an early deficit, but two late goals from the Sandpoint Bulldogs forced a 4-4 draw in 4A Inland Empire League play Tuesday at the Rotary Soccer Field.

“The game started off with a couple of small defensive breakdowns,” Lakeland coach Andrew Craig said. “Sandpoint is always a good team and we were finally able to slow things down and move the ball around. We carried it to the second half and got some quick goals, but just weren’t able to keep that. It’s something we’ll work on for the next time we play them. It should be a fun game.”

Lakeland (2-2-2, 0-0-1 4A IEL) travels to Moscow on Thursday.

Sandpoint is 5-1-1, 0-0-1.

POST FALLS — Diego Esquivel scored a go-ahead goal on a pass from fellow sophomore Nick Morris, then he tacked on an insurance goal in the Trojans’ 5A Inland Empire League win over the Vikings.

Esquivel took a diagonal ball, got around the back of a Vikings defender, then poked the ball low and inside the far post. This came 11 minutes after Cd’A’s Lane Thompson scored the equalizer in the 50th minute.

Morris had two assists, including a pass to Robbie Butterfield for the game’s first goal for Post Falls (2-2, 1-1).

“It was impressive,” Trojans coach Gabe Lawson said. “Nick had a great game. He combined with Diego to play superbly well. Our midfield in the second half was very strong and it was won there. They put up some heat on us and our goalkeeper (Levi McElwain) came up big when he had to.”

On Saturday, Post Falls hosts Lewiston, and Coeur d’Alene (1-2, 0-1) plays at Lake City.

First half — 1, PF, Robbie Butterfield (Nick Morris), 9:00. Second half — 2, Lane Thompson (unassisted), 50:00. 3, PF, Diego Esquivel (Morris), 61:00. 4, PF, Esquivel (penalty kick), 72:00.

COEUR d’ALENE — Vikings senior midfielder Cydney Roop finished off her first two-goal game of her career on Tuesday, helping the Vikings blank the Trojans in 5A Inland Empire League play.

“That’s the third goal in two games for her,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “In the first half, we really struggled and they put some pressure on us. (Vikings goalkeeper) Sami Lane had a couple of big, diving saves for us that I thought were going in. She was on fire. In the second half, we changed our system, really settled the game down and really exploited their back line.”

Junior forward Maggie Vietri had a goal and an assist for Cd’A (2-0, 1-0 5A IEL).

Coeur d’Alene hosts Lake City on Saturday.

Post Falls (0-4, 0-2) plays Thursday at Gonzaga Prep.

SPOKANE — Havana Johnson scored five goals for the Timberwolves in a nonleague win against the Titans.

“She had a very good day,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We’re at Lewiston (today), so she didn’t play big chunks of the first or second half, and she still had a lot of chances. She can be a very special player on any given day. In front of the net, there’s not a better player around given the opportunity.”

Annica Wilson scored two goals for Lake City (3-0), which travels to Lewiston for a 5A Inland Empire League match at Walker Field.

Sandpoint 1

SANDPOINT — Caroline Suppiger scored in the 67th minute as the host Bulldogs beat the Hawks in the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both teams at War Memorial Field.

The goal came after Ashly Busch made a strong run down the right side, kept the ball in play, then sent a cross in front of the goal for Suppiger, who slotted her third tally of the season for Sandpoint (2-1-1).

“Ashly was able to drop past the defense and found Caroline,” described Bulldogs head coach Conor Baranski of the goal. “I appreciated our reaction after halftime. Our second half was miles ahead of our first half, which was about as poor as we’ve played.”

Madi Schoening shut down several Lakeland chances, leading the back four of Riley Couch, Taylor Ward and Grace Johnson to its first shutout of the season, limiting the work of goalie Paige DuMars by yielding just two shots on goal.

Lakeland (0-2-1) kept the game scoreless in the first half, keyed by a stellar play from goalie Dani Dowd, who came out and stuffed a potential breakaway goal by Riley Walkington. Hawks coach Mario Maddy called it a well-fought game.

“It’s a matter of who flinches, and we made one mistake,” he said. “We competed with them well, but we’ve got some work to do. It’s a long season.”

Lakeland plays host to Moscow on Thursday.

First half — None. Second half — 1, Spt, Caroline Suppiger (Ashly Busch), 67:00.
