MAIL: Postal service a success

| September 4, 2015 9:00 PM

The constant delay of mail is the result of politics. As a result of the ominous 2006 congressional mandate for the U.S. Postal Service to pre-fund future retirees’ health benefits, at $5.6 billion per year until 2016, the USPS had to drastically cut back on service by closing post offices around the country.

Despite this setback however, the USPS is rebounding using no tax dollars by making an operational profit of $1.2 billion so far this year employing more than 100,000 veterans.

This is an American issue, not just a Democrat or Republican issue. The USPS is part of the United States Constitution for all citizens to utilize. The people of this great country expect quality service at a reasonable cost. Every American deserves good service despite technological advances.

The Internet has actually helped by increased parcel sales due to online shopping. With your encouragement, the USPS is rebounding financially on a steady basis despite the pre-funding burden.

Congress has the power to make the USPS competitive for all Americans, including Rural Idaho, to use with confidence. Let your representatives know how you feel. Thank you for your support.
