EAGLE — After a tough setback in the semifinals, the Lake City Timberwolves bounced back in a big way on Saturday afternoon, beating the Centennial Patriots 3-2 in the third place match of the state 5A tournament at Eagle High.
“It was extremely important to get this win today,” Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. “The boys were heartbroke with how we played last year and couldn’t bring back a trophy. Our eight seniors, at the start of last night after a team meeting, said that it is over with (Friday’s 3-1 loss to Rocky Mountain), and they’re ready to play. And they did really well against a team with deep tradition.”
Jack Barrett and Garrett Flolo — both seniors — scored first half goals to push Lake City to a 2-1 halftime lead. Junior Travis Swallow added another goal 2:30 into the second half for Lake City, which played the final 15 minutes a man down due to a player receiving a second yellow card.
“I was very happy with how we played,” Beadell said. “I was super excited to sit back and watch them play. They threw every number at us they could in the second half, and we did very well at defending that. (Jared) Stone had five of the biggest saves I’ve ever seen and our defense kept us in the game. We played a lot of guys for it being a third game in three days, and it’s awesome to bring a trophy back.”
Lake City finishes 14-2-1.

CALDWELL — Allison Kirby scored two second half goals as the Tigers rallied past the Eagles in the third place match at the state 3A tournament at Vallivue High.
“We kind of changed our formation up and made some changes,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “The girls just hung in there and stuck to what we wanted to accomplish. It was nice to see the girls keep their composure.”
Timberlake (18-1-1) was runner-up in the 2014 tournament.
“There’s a lot of teams that haven’t been to state, let alone be able to put a trophy like this in their case,” Michael said. “We’re very proud to represent the north and bring that back. I’m proud of our team and what we’ve accomplished this season, but really thankful for our seniors keeping us in this game. It was just a hard fought game and we were down the entire first half, but they helped not lose our composure and not forget who we are, which was kind of nice. It’s nice to have that kind of leadership on the team.”
