STATE HIGH SCHOOL BOYS, GIRLS SOCCER TOURNAMENTS: North rises on first day
Boise-area teams often dominate at the state high school soccer tournaments, but District 1 teams went 5 for 6 on the first day Thursday.
On the boys side, Lake City beat Boise 2-1 in 5A; and Lakeland downed Blackfoot 4-0 in 4A.
On the girls side, Lake City toppled Rocky Mountain 4-3 in 5A. In 3A, Timberlake downed Community School 2-1 and Coeur d’Alene Charter rallied past Shelley 3-2. Timberlake and Charter will meet in one semi, in a rematch of last year’s state title game, won by Charter.
Coeur d’Alene’s girls lost 1-0 to Centennial.

MERIDIAN — The Timberwolves (13-1-1) scored twice in a three-minute span midway through the first half, then held off an onslaught by the Braves the rest of the way on the field turf at Rocky Mountain High.
“Really, to be honest, we finally settled down in the game,” Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. “Boise’s a real high-pressure team. We finally got used to the turf, the sun dried out the field, the ball stopped skipping.”
Jack Barrett scored the first goal, chasing down a ball played into space by Spencer Messina, then beating the keeper near post from about 12 yards out on the left side.
Right after that goal, Beadell subbed in Matt Robitaille, and he made it 2-0 three minutes later, knocking in the rebound after back-to-back shots by Barrett and Garrett Harrison were knocked away by the Boise keeper.
“It was fast and furious,” Beadell said. “Then they (the Braves) started throwing numbers at us. Jared Stone was huge in goal today.”
Lake City advanced to the semifinals for only the second time in Beadell’s second year as coach. The Timberwolves lost on penalty kicks to Borah in the 2006 semis.
Today, Lake City plays Rocky Mountain of Meridian in the semis at 10:30 a.m. (PDT) at Eagle High.
“My guys played incredible today,” Beadell said. “We have a chance to do something special.”

CALDWELL — Juho Reiman scored two goals for the Hawks in a win over the Broncos in the opening round of the state 4A tournament at Brothers Park.
“In the first five minutes, we came out a little slow,” Lakeland coach Andrew Craig said. “The first minute into the match, they came down and shot right at us and it took our guys a few minutes to get into the match.”
Seth Galbreath and Cody Callahan also scored goals for Lakeland (13-2-2), which faces Bishop Kelly in the semifinals today. Bishop Kelly beat Twin Falls 2-1 in another opening round match.
On Galbraith’s goal, which opened the scoring, “The ball came loose in front of the net and Cody got past the defender and played a shot to Seth,” Craig said. “It was a really good finish and it really was a changing point in the match for us. They got the confidence to ramp it up and play hard the rest of the match.”

MERIDIAN — Havana Johnson came up with another hat trick, giving her 32 goals on the season, for the Timberwolves (13-0-2) in the opening round at Meridian High.
Johnson has at least four hat tricks this season, Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said.
“The kid has a knack for finding the back of the net,” Ruchti said. “At this level, that’s pretty special.”
Raimee Sherle of Rocky Mountain (14-4-0), a University of Montana commit who came into the game with 95 career goals, was held scoreless by Lake City.
“We knew we had to score some goals today,” Ruchti said. “That’s a big part of playing here today. Our front line was great. I thought everyone played well. Our center mids held up. They had a pretty good player, one of the best players in the state and we were able to isolate her. We had a good game plan. Our front line was great all over the place. That was good enough to win today.”
Morgan Farrington scored a hat trick for the Grizzlies.

“It was a really, really great game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “Both sides played really well. We moved the ball around better than we had all year. At the end of the game, they just finished one off in the last four minutes off a counter attack.”
Scoring opportunities by Cydney Roop and Maggie Vietri were saved by Centennial.
Coeur d’Alene (9-5-1) will face Skyline (15-2-0) of Idaho Falls today in a loser-out match at 10:30 a.m. PDT at Rocky Mountain High.
“We stack up good against them,” said Vredenburg of Skyline. “We played them in a similar situation last year and we’ve got to pick ourselves up and try to win the game.”

CALDWELL — The Tigers turned two hard fouls into goals to beat the Cutthroat Trout of Sun Valley in opening round at Vallivue High, to stay undefeated on the season.
After a teammate was pushed from behind into the opposing goalkeeper in the second overtime, midfielder Carleen Simpson of Timberlake (17-0-1) scored on a penalty kick to the lower-right hand side in the 93rd minute for the winning goal.
“It was a pretty hard collision,” Tigers coach Steve Michael said. “Carleen put it where she needed to, where the goalie had a tough time getting to it. It was a very intense game, it was probably our best game of the season. Normally that doesn’t happen in a match. We practiced PKs for this very instance.”
Timberlake will look to keep its undefeated season alive as it plays Coeur d’Alene Charter at 2 p.m. today at Vallivue. The game is a rematch of the state 3A final last season, won by Charter.
“That’ll be another great game,” Michael said. “They usually are when you come here.”

CALDWELL — Blanked for more than 50 minutes in their opener at Vallivue High, the Panthers (14-5-1) stunned the Russets (13-1-1), who had allowed just two goals coming into state, by scoring three times in a 20-minute span in the second half.
Cecelia McAfee’s goal at 72:39 capped the comeback, and lifted Coeur d’Alene Charter into a semifinal matchup vs. Timberlake today at 1 p.m. PDT.
“Unbelievable,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Dave Baxter said. “Just an amazing come-from-behind victory in a pressure-packed situation. Every bit of the credit goes to the players. They kept their composure and kept fighting for the full 80 minutes. Shelley had only allowed two goals all season.”
Brooklyn Cunningham scored Charter’s first goal at 53:02, and Alexa Ricks tied the game at 2 at 68:32.
