PREP BOYS SOCCER: Bulldogs beat Bears 1-0, lose coin toss
MOSCOW — When is a win a loss? Just ask Sandpoint, which beat Moscow 1-0 on Saturday in Moscow to wrap up 4A IEL play, but lost an ensuing coin flip tie-breaker to Lakeland after the match, making them the No. 2 seed to the 4A Region 1 tournament..
Dawson Mulder reached double digits in goals by netting his 10th of the season in the 50th minute for the Bulldogs (11-2-3, 2-0-2 4A IEL), finishing a long free kick from Jackson Rinck to score the game winner in a 1-0 win over Moscow. The problem is they needed one more goal to win the first tie-breaker, goal differential, as Lakeland also finished league play at 2-0-2.
The second tie-breaker was the dreaded coin flip, won by Lakeland, which was awarded the No. 1 seed and a first round bye.
Bulldogs head coach Adam Tajan said it was a hard earned goal for Mulder, and also a tough way to lose home field advantage and a first-round bye.
“It was a long free kick from Rinck, and Mulder got clobbered by the keeper. In the chaos, the ball found the back of the net. He just got blasted by the keeper,” described Tajan, whose team hit the crossbar and post and nearly scored the coveted second goal down the stretch. “We had several near goals. We were coming at them to get that second goal.”
No. 2 Sandpoint will host No. 3 Moscow on Tuesday in a loser-out game against No. 3 Moscow at 3:30 p.m. at Pine St. Field. The winner advances to play at No. 1 Lakeland on Thursday in the championship.

COEUR D’ALENE — After watching his team fight through a sluggish first half, Lake City coach Chad Beadell wanted to see some of his older players help step up and make a difference in a loser-out match in the 5A Region 1 tournament.
Enter the 2014 5A Inland Empire League Most Valuable Player Jack Barrett.
Barrett scored two goals in the second half, helping the top-seeded Timberwolves beat the fourth-seeded Trojans in the opening round at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
“It was a very sluggish start for us,” Beadell said. “Post Falls had a great chance early in the game. We had a defender that slipped and fell, but the ball bounced off the goalpost and went across the field, and we were kind of on our heels at that point.”
Colton Gednalske opened the scoring in the 7th minute for Lake City (11-1-1), which hosts Coeur d’Alene in the regional championship game on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
“Post Falls is a really good team,” Beadell said. “In the second half, you’re wanting to see your older guys step up, and Jack did that today. We didn’t play our best, but with it being a loser-out game and we’ve got everything to lose, we played a little tenative. We weathered that early storm, but I’m happy with how the guys responded.”
Post Falls finishes 5-8-1.

COEUR d’ALENE — The No. 2 seed Vikings came roaring back from a one-goal deficit after halftime, putting three balls in the back of the net to beat the No. 3 seed Bengals in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament.
The go-ahead goal came in the 58th minute, on a corner kick from Konar Skindlov. His pass went to Gabe Nazemi, who smashed it onto the back post.
“We were definitely disappointed with our first half display,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake said. “We came out flat and we had to chase the game. But my team kept fighting and I’m so proud of how they won the game. Birdger Dolan and Jason Lukes played lights-out shutting down their main striker.”
Nazemi’s goal came seven minutes after the first one from Coeur d’Alene (6-6). A long ball was sent by goalkeeper Shawn McKeeken, then Lane Thompson ran onto it and put it in.
