PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint girls edge Lakeland; Hawk, Bulldog boys play to tie

RATHDRUM — As first varsity goals go, it’s pretty tough to beat freshman Jezza Hutto’s, which led the Sandpoint Bulldogs to a 1-0 win over the Hawks in 4A Inland Empire League girls soccer on Wednesday.
Hutto took a pass from Caroline Suppiger and calmly slotted the game’s only goal in the seventh minute, making her first goal as a Bulldog a memorable one.
“I thought she was very composed with really the only chance she had. Scoring in the seventh minute was huge for us,” Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski said. “I don’t feel like we played well again. We had times where we were playing well, but there were a lot of times where we weren’t good enough. Lakeland is good at disrupting what we want to do.”
Paige DuMars picked up her third shutout of the season between the pipes, stopping seven shots and extending a scoreless streak in league play.
Sandpoint (4-5-2, 3-0 4A IEL) is at Lake City in a game that was moved to Friday, at 3 p.m.
Lakeland (3-5-3, 1-2-0) plays host to Timberlake today at 4.
First half — 1, Spt, Jezza Hutto (Caroline Suppiger), 7:00. Second half — none.
Shots on goal — LL 7, Spt 7.
Saves — LL 2; Spt, Paige DuMars, 2.

SANDPOINT — One thing is certain about the Lakeland and Sandpoint boys soccer teams: They’re about as even as it gets, and Wednesday’s 4A Inland Empire League showdown at Pine St. Field once again proved it.
For the second time in as many meetings, the Bulldogs and Hawks (9-2-3, 1-0-2 4A IEL) played to a tie, following a 4-4 opener with a far more defensive-minded 1-1 battle.
Dawson Mulder chipped in his eighth goal of the season on a nice feed from Tyler Moore in the fourth minute, staking the Bulldogs to an early 1-0 lead in a match that both teams knew could determine who hosts the 4A Region 1 title game.
Lakeland got the equalizer in the final minutes of the first half, when Joho Reiman blasted in a shot off a pass from Dade McDermitt. Sandpoint thought there was a handball right before the kick, and complaining about it to the ref drew a red card, which forced the Bulldogs to play a man down for the whole second half.
The Hawks, who feature a couple of dangerous foreign exchange playmakers, kept four players back deep knowing they were a man up, and limited the Bulldogs’ looks offensively.
“I think it’s a big win to come up with a tie, that’s huge in Sandpoint. Hopefully we become the high seed,” said Lakeland coach Andrew Craig, who liked how his team responded to the early goal. “Being determined to come back, staying in the fight to get that goal.”
“We played with an attitude defensively,” Sandpoint coach Adam Tajan said. “For us to be a man down for the second half, and that’s a good team with fast forwards, we played well defensively,” said Tajan, who wasn’t sure how all of the league tie-breakers play out. “It makes our next games huge vs. Moscow.”
Lakeland (10-2-2, 1-0-2) plays host to Moscow next Tuesday.
First half — 1, Spt, Dawson Mulder (Tyler Moore), 4:00. 2, LL, Juho Reiman (Dade McDermitt), 39:00. Second half — none.
Shots on goal — LL 6, Spt 3.
Saves — LL, Max Baker, 2; Spt, Kyle Hertel, 4.
