| November 28, 2015 8:00 PM

Local nonprofits seeking funding for special projects or programs are encouraged to contact the Women’s Gift Alliance as soon as possible.

The Dec. 12 deadline for nonprofit organizations to apply for a 2016 Women’s Gift Alliance grant is fast approaching.

Representatives from interested nonprofits should download a preliminary application from the WGA website: www.wgakc.org.

Grant applicants will be considered to receive one of three large pooled grants of approximately $22,000 or one of the smaller endowment grants awarded to semifinalists. These grants will be awarded next summer.

Funding for these grants is generated directly by Women’s Gift Alliance members, who for more than a decade have been pooling their financial resources to provide meaningful support to cultural, charitable and educational projects in the community.

WGA funds projects that make a significant impact on the community and demonstrate one or more of the following criteria: Address a community problem, enrich the fabric of the community, foster collaboration or partnerships or create a bold new venture.

This year, WGA awarded three large, pooled grants of $22,500 each to Gizmo-cda, KIDS Camp, and Safe Passage (formerly North Idaho) Violence Prevention Center. Two $2,500 endowment grants were awrded to Farragut State Park Museum at The Brig and Lutherhaven.

Since its inception in 2004, WGA has awarded more than $900,000 to area nonprofits.

The organization is always seeking more female philanthropists to join their efforts, and this year, there is a new initiative designed to entice younger women to to join.

An anonymous donor has provided seed money for a “Sprouting Fund.” Because of this gift, women 40 and younger are invited to apply for a one-year membership in the Women’s Gift Alliance at a discounted price. The Sprouting Fund will be used as scholarships to supplement 50 percent of the first year’s dues for a select number of first-year applicants. The full dues of $1,050 for the subsequent 2-year commitment are the responsibility of the applicant. Recipients must agree to serve on a committee for one year and attend at least one WGA function. Applications are available at the WGA website, www.wgakc.org, and should be returned to Kim Ransier c/o WGA P.O. Box 3031, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83816.

General memberships are due to be renewed by Dec. 31 in order to be eligible to vote during the 2016 grant cycle. Contributions are made directly to the Idaho Community Foundation for accounting purposes only. All contributions are fully tax deductible.
