Press editorial: Thanks for stuffing hatred

| November 26, 2015 10:00 PM

A little gratitude goes a long way.

Its absence? That’s a prescription for misery.

Today is Thanksgiving Day — a day to count your blessings. Will you? And will you mean it?

Most of us will avidly pursue the goal of being stuffed to the point of bursting before the pie even reaches the table. Meantime, our world is stuffed with anxious, angry and fearful people who spread their malaise far and wide. Random acts of violence are unsettling and consistently unleash political and personal assault teams, eager to play the blame game with little or no personal accountability taken into consideration. Anxiety, like an epidemic, spreads.

For those who remain calm, purposeful and positive, we are thankful.

For those who set examples worthy of emulation — examples that will lead to a stronger, healthier civilization — we are even more grateful.

It’s our hope that hatred based on fear — is there any other kind? — will take a holiday today and remind us all that in the absence of fear and anger, peace and productivity flourish.

We wish you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving, and remind you of a truth imparted two centuries ago by Chief Tecumseh.

“If you see no reason for giving thanks,” he said, “the fault lies only in yourself.”
